Epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) is one of the most important diseases affecting more than 100 species of wild and cultured finfish. EUS was first reported in farmed ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) from Japan in 1971 and has since then spread across different countries of four continents including Asia, Australia, North America and Africa. The spread of the disease, especially in Asia-Pacific region and Africa has led to substantial damage to the fish resources and livelihood of the fish farmers. No reports are available confirming the outbreak of the disease from Europe and South America. The latest outbreak of EUS has been reported from Canada in a new susceptible species brown bullhead, Ameiurus nebulosus. It seems that the disease has potential to spread further, owing to the epizootic nature of the disease and broad susceptible host range. Considering the global importance of this disease, this review provides the current status of understanding about the etiology, process of diseases development, species affected, diagnostic methods as well as control and preventive measures, in light of the historical developments in those areas.

Characterization ofBacillusspp. isolated from intestine ofLabeo rohita-Towards identifying novel probiotics for aquaculture

Md. Idrish Raja Khan, Tanmoy Gon Choudhury, Dibyendu Kamilya, Shongsir Joy Monsang, Janmejay Parhi

Summary: This study evaluated the probiotic potential of two bacterial strains isolated from the intestine of freshwater teleost fish. One strain showed effective antimicrobial response, adhesion properties, antioxidative response, and extracellular enzyme production, and it was found to be non-pathogenic in vivo challenge study in the fish species.

Summary: The study showed that co-culture of L. rohita with W. globosa and L. marginalis can improve water quality, welfare parameters, enhance fish survival, and increase productivity. Among the treatments, T-3 demonstrated significantly higher total biomass, survival rate, and net fish yield compared to the other groups.

In vitro effects of Asparagus racemosus ethanolic root extract on cellular immune response and immune-related gene expression of Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822) leucocytes and anti-Aeromonas hydrophila activity

Shongsir Joy Monsang, Arpit Acharya, Md. Idrish Raja Khan, Dibyendu Kamilya

Summary: The study found that the ethanolic root extract of Asparagus racemosus significantly enhanced cellular immune parameters of HK leucocytes at different concentrations, and upregulated immune-related genes at the molecular level. The results suggest the potential of AREE as an effective immunostimulant for aquaculture.

Summary: In this study, a bacterial strain identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens with probiotic potential was isolated from the digestive tract of rohu fish. The strain showed strong antimicrobial activity, tolerance to a wide range of pH and bile salt concentration, and high adhesion properties, with the presence of putative probiotic marker genes. The findings suggest the potential use of this strain in the aquaculture industry.

Dietary Asparagus racemosus ethanolic root extract modulates immune-biochemical response, immune gene expression and provides protection against Aeromonas hydrophila in Labeo rohita fingerlings

Shongsir Joy Monsang, Arpit Acharya, Tanmoy Gon Choudhury, Dibyendu Kamilya

Summary: This study found that dietary supplementation of Asparagus racemosus extract has beneficial effects on the immune system of Labeo rohita and enhances the fish's resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila infection. A dosage of 100 mg/kg of feed for 15 days is suggested for optimal immune stimulation.
