Bangladesh has been experiencing several problems over the past few decades. These include over population, energy crisis and global warming, etc. Adequate amount of power generation in a sustainable way is an important issue for rapidly increasing population and economic development. Renewable energy can play an effective role to meet energy demand. Since it is an agrarian country, biomass is one of the potential renewable energy sources in Bangladesh. Agricultural crop residues, animal manure and municipal solid waste are the major sources of biomass energy in the country. This paper presents the scope, potential and technologies related to the use of biomass resources. The study also discusses the biomass projects undertaken by the government and non-government organizations, plans and strategies to promote biomass technologies in Bangladesh. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The Impacts of Terrestrial Wind Turbine's Operation on Telecommunication Services

Ukashatu Abubakar, Saad Mekhilef, Hazlie Mokhlis, Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian, Alex Stojcevski, Muhyaddin Rawa

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical modeling and evaluation of the components in wind turbines that cause scattering of communication signals. The operation of an adjacent wind farm affects telecommunication signals by inducing electromagnetic interference in radar, television, and radio signals due to the complex geometry of the rotating blades. The most complex modeling aspect is the radar cross section (RCS) model of the wind turbine blade, which requires significant computational resources. However, clutter filtering using Doppler signal processing is an interesting technique that can reduce the computational burden. The review summarizes the theoretical analysis and simulations of the impact of wind turbines on communication signals and proposes remedies to minimize this impact.

Fixed-time sliding mode observer-based controller for a class of uncertain nonlinear double integrator systems

Pooyan Alinaghi Hosseinabadi, Ali Soltani Sharif Abadi, Howard Schwartz, Hemanshu Pota, Saad Mekhilef

Summary: This paper investigates the fixed-time convergence issue in uncertain nonlinear double integrator systems using a sliding mode observer-based controller. The proposed controller estimates unmeasured states, unknown disturbances, and uncertainties, ensuring fixed-time convergence for trajectory tracking. The stability analysis is established using the Lyapunov theory, and the controller's validity is tested in a simulated example of a robot manipulator. The superiority of this method is demonstrated by comparing it with two other methods from the literature.

Pooyan Alinaghi Hosseinabadi, Hemanshu Pota, Saad Mekhilef, Howard Schwartz

Summary: In order to maximize power extraction from wind energy, a novel controller combining maximum power point tracking (MPPT), state and disturbance observers, and fixed-time stability notion is proposed for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion system (WECS). The sliding mode control (SMC) method is used to design the observer-based controller to ensure robustness. The stability and validity of the proposed method are tested in Simulink/MATLAB for a DFIG under different wind speed scenarios, and it outperforms the classical finite-time method.
