The huge amount of solar energy available on Earth's surface has heightened awareness in Concentrating Solar Power, and more particularly in hybrid concepts. The integrated solar combined cycle system (ISCCS) is one of the more promising hybrid configurations for converting solar energy into electricity and it might become the technology of choice in the near future. This article reviews the R&D activities and published studies since the introduction of such a concept in the 1990s. The review includes the current status and describes different hybridizations of solar energy with natural gas, coal and other renewable energy sources. Furthermore, it provides in-depth analysis of real and expected R&D finding. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Which is the most competitive solar power technology for integration into the existing copper mining plants: Photovoltaic (PV), Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), or hybrid PV-CSP?

Omar Behar, Daniel Sbarbaro, Luis Moran

Summary: Given the high solar resources in regions where most mines in Chile are located, this paper investigates the feasibility of integrating solar power technology into copper concentrate plants (CCPs), with PV technology being the most suitable option. CSP-CCPs are not attractive investments due to high Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), longer discounted pack-back period (DPP) and modified internal rate of return (MIRR).

Optimized agrivoltaic tracking for nearly-full commodity crop and energy production

E. K. Grubbs, S. M. Gruss, V. Z. Schull, M. J. Gosney, M. V. Mickelbart, S. Brouder, M. W. Gitau, P. Bermel, M. R. Tuinstra, R. Agrawal

Summary: As the global population grows, the demand for food, energy, and water will increase significantly. However, limited land availability and competition for solar resources pose challenges to resource generation technologies. In the United States, both agriculture and solar energy production have adopted densification schemes to improve yields and energy output per unit of land. This research proposes an Agrivoltaic food and energy coproduction architecture that optimizes power generation while maintaining crop productivity by implementing ideal anti-tracking during critical growth periods. This technology offers a viable pathway for widespread solar implementation throughout the contiguous United States.
