While biofuels have currently been regarded as a good alternative for fossil fuels, there remain many debates on their impacts on human and environment. This paper tried to shed light on bio-ethanol in Brazil as one of the main producers and exporters in the world. The main question was to understand how sustainable is bio-ethanol production in Brazil? To answer, the political motives of producing bio-ethanol followed by its ecological and socio-economic impacts were discussed. The paper concluded that although bio-ethanol production in Brazil seems environmentally friendly, it might socio-economically be hazardous. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Policing Directions: a Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Police Presence

Philipp M. Dau, Christophe Vandeviver, Maite Dewinter, Frank Witlox, Tom Vander Beken

Summary: This systematic review examines the effectiveness of police presence and finds that it has a crime reduction effect on motor theft, property, violence, and guns. Police presence also reduces calls for service and improves traffic behavior. The review suggests that focusing police presence on specific areas, times, and types of crime achieves the greatest effectiveness.

Environmental impact assessment and efficiency of cotton: the case of Northeast Iran

Karim Naderi Mahdei, Seyed Mohammad Jafar Esfahani, Philippe Lebailly, Thomas Dogot, Steven Van Passel, Hossein Azadi

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental effects of cotton production in the South Khorasan Province of Iran using life cycle assessment (LCA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA). The findings revealed that respiratory inorganics, non-renewable energy, carcinogens, and global warming were the main environmental burdens of cotton production. Energy, on-system pollution, and waste played crucial roles in the environmental impacts of cotton processing. The study suggested improving farmers' knowledge to minimize the environmental impact of cotton production by optimizing the use of chemical fertilizers or substituting them with green fertilizers.

Does Increasing Farm Plot Size Influence the Visual Quality of Everyday Agricultural Landscapes?

Kristina Janeckova Molnarova, Iris C. Bohnet, Kamila Svobodova, Katerina Cerny Pixova, Michael Daniels, Jan Skalos, Kristyna Drhlikova, Hossein Azadi, Roman Zamecnik, Petr Sklenicka

Summary: The increase in farm plot size has significantly impacted central and eastern European agricultural landscapes since the 1950s. Efforts have been made to reverse this trend to restore important ecosystem functions and aesthetic values of landscapes. Visual landscape quality plays a crucial role in agricultural policies, but no comprehensive research has been conducted on the links between perceived visual landscape quality and farm plot size. This study found that people preferred smaller farm plot sizes in flat landscapes with low woody vegetation, and even a moderate decrease in plot size improved beauty scores.
