The energy crisis and environmental degradation are currently two vital issues for global sustainable development. Rapid industrialization and population explosion in India has led to the migration of people from villages to cities, which generate thousands tons of municipal solid waste daily, which is one of the important contributors for environmental degradation at national level. Improper management of municipal solid waste (MSW) causes hazards to inhabitants. The management of MSW requires proper infrastructure, maintenance and upgrade for all activities. The MSWM (municipal solid waste management) system comprises with generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of solid wastes. In the present study, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive review of MSW management to evaluate the current status of waste to energy facilities for sustainable management, which will be helpful in tackling this huge quantity of waste and the problem of energy crisis. A critical review of known MSW management practices/processes in Indian scenario, which will give an idea to investors about the market potential, the maturity of the practicing technologies, and the environmental and economical aspects was also evaluated with its advantages and disadvantages. Optimization and elucidation of organophosphorus and pyrethroid degradation pathways by a novel bacterial consortium C3 using RSM and GC-MS-based metabolomics

Muneer Ahmad Malla, Anamika Dubey, Ashwani Kumar, Abhinandan Patil, Shamshad Ahmad, Richa Kothari, Shweta Yadav

Summary: The present study aimed to develop a bacterial consortium (C3) consisting of three different isolates (A, B, and C) for efficient degradation of chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, and glyphosate. The consortium isolates were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bacillus shackletonii through genome sequencing. Using central composite design (CCD), the optimal conditions for pesticide degradation, including pesticide concentration, pH, and inoculum size, were determined. Under optimized conditions, the consortium exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) degradation efficiency of 94.93%, 89.4%, and 87.01% for Chl, Cyp, and Gly after 15 days of incubation. The study proposed a common biodegradation pathway for each pesticide based on integrated genomic and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Overall, this study highlights the role of microbes in pesticide degradation and suggests that the developed consortium has promising potential for the safe, economical, and eco-friendly detoxification or elimination of chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, and glyphosate.

Mechanistic action of pesticides on pests and their consequent effect on fishes and human health with remediation strategies

Anita Singh, Monika Mahajan, Richa Kothari, Navin Kumar Singh, Rajeev Pratap Singh

Summary: Population growth and increased demand for agricultural products have led to widespread use of pesticides in recent years. These pesticides are used to control pests through various mechanisms. They are employed in agriculture to boost profits, crop yield, quality, and storage life. However, the excessive and extensive use of resistant pesticides has resulted in contamination of water bodies, fields, crops, and aquatic life, posing a threat to human health. Strict regulations and limits have been established to monitor pesticide residues. This review focuses on pesticide contamination in the food chain, particularly from aquatic bodies to fish and humans. It also discusses regulations and limits such as maximum residual limits, acceptable daily intake, theoretical maximum daily intake, and estimated carcinogenicity/non-carcinogenicity for assessing fish and human health risks. Additionally, the article discusses cost-effective remediation techniques, including phytoremediation, adsorption, the Fenton oxidation method, microalgal/high-rate algal ponds, and nanotechnology, comparing their remediation costs.

Potential of biogenic and non-biogenic waste materials as flocculant for algal biomass harvesting: Mechanism, parameters, challenges and future prospects

Har Mohan Singh, Mriduta Sharma, V. V. Tyagi, Kajol Goria, D. Buddhi, Atul Sharma, Frank Bruno, Shane Sheoran, Richa Kothari

Summary: This review article focuses on the use of waste materials (biogenic/non-biogenic) as flocculants for harvesting algal biomass. Chemical flocculants are commonly used for commercial-scale algal biomass harvesting, but their high cost is a major disadvantage. Waste materials-based flocculants provide a cost-effective solution for minimizing waste and reusing it for sustainable biomass recovery. The article provides insights into the classification, preparation methods, mechanisms, influencing factors, challenges, and future recommendations of waste materials-based flocculants for algal harvesting. Waste materials-based flocculants exhibit similar flocculation mechanisms and efficiencies as chemical flocculants, making them a valuable resource for reducing waste load and transforming waste into valuable resources.
