A detailed reliability assessment of bioenergy production systems based on poplar cultivation was made. The aim of this assessment was to demonstrate the Economic feasibility of implementing poplar biomass production for power generation in Spain. The assessment considers the following chain of energy generation: cultivation and harvesting, and transportation and electricity generation in biomass power plants (10, 25 and 50 MW). Twelve scenarios were analysed in accordance with the following: two harvesting methods (high density packed stems and chip production in the field), two crop distributions around the power plant and three power plant sizes. The results show that the cost of biomass delivered at power plant ranges from 18.65 to 23.96 (sic) Mg-1 dry basis. According to power plant size, net profits range from 3 to 22 million - (sic) per yr. Sensibility analyses applied to capital cost at the power plant and to biomass production in the field demonstrate that they do not affect the feasibility of these systems. Reliability is improved if benefits through selling CO2 emission credits are taken into account. This study clears up the Economic uncertainty of poplar biomass energy systems that already has been accepted as environmentally friendlier and as offering better energetic performance. The Role of Informal Waste Management in Urban Metabolism: A Review of Eight Latin American Countries

Beatriz Espinosa-Aquino, Xavier Gabarrell Durany, Roberto Quiros Vargas

Summary: The social and spatial segregation structures in Latin America lead to the concentration of social or demographic groups in specific geographic sectors of the city, creating poor, wealthy, and marginal areas. This segregation destroys the symbolic and territorial urban continuity, resulting in marginalization and fragmentation. A bibliographic evaluation was conducted in eight Latin American countries to understand the behavior and conditions of informal waste pickers. The study evaluated their environmental contribution, organizations, and their link with urban metabolism. The findings showed that well-organized waste pickers contribute to the city's sustainability and provide better living conditions, while marginal groups engage in waste collection for economic support.

Winter Greenhouse Tomato Cultivation: Matching Leaf Pruning and Supplementary Lighting for Improved Yield and Precocity

Elisa Appolloni, Ivan Paucek, Giuseppina Pennisi, Luigi Manfrini, Xavier Gabarrell, Giorgio Gianquinto, Francesco Orsini

Summary: In a high-wire tomato greenhouse, solar radiation is mostly intercepted by the top of the crop canopy, and the role of lower leaves diminishes with age, turning them into sink organs rather than sources. Basal leaf defoliation is a widely used practice in high-wire greenhouse cultivation management. However, supplemental LED lighting for high-density tomato production may affect the role of basal leaves, promoting their source role for fruit development and growth.

Summary: In recent years, rooftops have been increasingly utilized as productive spaces, and this study aims to explore the potential of using hyperspectral data to identify roof materials for resource production. The case study conducted in a Mediterranean region north of Barcelona identified diverse building typologies, uses, and population densities. By employing two hyperspectral remote sensors, the study successfully identified seven roof classes using the k-means clustering algorithm. The majority of roofs were found to be made of metals, followed by ceramic tiles. The findings indicate that 51% of the rooftops analyzed have the potential for food, water, or energy production, although further criteria are needed for a more comprehensive assessment.

Summary: As the global population grows, the demand for food, energy, and water will increase significantly. However, limited land availability and competition for solar resources pose challenges to resource generation technologies. In the United States, both agriculture and solar energy production have adopted densification schemes to improve yields and energy output per unit of land. This research proposes an Agrivoltaic food and energy coproduction architecture that optimizes power generation while maintaining crop productivity by implementing ideal anti-tracking during critical growth periods. This technology offers a viable pathway for widespread solar implementation throughout the contiguous United States.
