The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the administration of egg white hydrolysates on obesity-related disorders, with a focus on lipid metabolism, inflammation and oxidative stress, in Zucker fatty rats. Obese Zucker rats received water, pepsin egg white hydrolysate (750 mg/kg/day) or Rhizopus aminopeptidase egg white hydrolysate (750 mg/kg/day) for 12 weeks. Lean Zucker rats received water. Body weight, solid and liquid intakes were weekly measured. At the end of the study, urine, faeces, different organs and blood samples were collected. The consumption of egg white hydrolysed with pepsin significantly decreased the epididymal adipose tissue, improved hepatic steatosis, and lowered plasmatic concentration of free fatty acids in the obese animals. It also decreased plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and reduced oxidative stress. Pepsin egg white hydrolysate could be used as a tool to improve obesity-related complications.

Antinociceptive and modulatory effect of pathoplastic changes in spinal glia of a TLR4/CD14 blocking molecule in two models of pain in rat

Miguel M. Garcia, Miguel Molina-Alvarez, Carmen Rodriguez-Rivera, Nancy Paniagua, Ernesto Quesada, Jose Antonio Uranga, Maria Isabel Rodriguez-Franco, David Pascual, Carlos Goicoechea

Summary: Spinal glia plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of chronic pain. The TLR4 signaling pathway is identified as a key trigger mechanism in pain. By using a CD14/TLR4 antagonist, researchers explored the effects of TLR4 inhibition on pain development and glia activation in different pain models. Their findings suggest that peripheral and central TLR4 have different roles in diverse types of pain.

Summary: In this study, we used a rat model to investigate the effects of acetic acid stimulation and pretreatment with probiotics on visceral pain. The results showed that acetic acid stimulation decreased visceral sensitivity but increased colonic mucosa damage, while pretreatment with probiotics normalized visceral sensitivity but increased the number of macrophages.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential antihypertensive effect of egg white hydrolysate (EWH) and its beneficial effects on blood vessels in rats with severe hypertension. The results showed that EWH significantly reduced blood pressure and improved vascular function. This effect may be attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of EWH.

Potential Role of Bioactive Proteins and Peptides Derived from Legumes towards Metabolic Syndrome

Marta Garces-Rimon, Diego Morales, Marta Miguel-Castro

Summary: This study reviewed the beneficial actions of legumes proteins and peptides, with a focus on their effects on metabolic syndrome. In vitro tests have shown the promising potential of bioactive hydrolysates and peptides from pulses, but only a few animal models have validated these effects. Further research, including clinical trials, is needed to clarify the effective health implications.

Dietary Egg White Hydrolysate Prevents Male Reproductive Dysfunction after Long-Term Exposure to Aluminum in Rats

Caroline Silveira Martinez, Jose Antonio Uranga-Ocio, Franck Maciel Pecanha, Dalton Valentim Vassallo, Christopher Exley, Marta Miguel-Castro, Giulia Alessandra Wiggers

Summary: The study found that egg white hydrolysate (EWH) can protect rats from the effects of long-term exposure to high and low levels of aluminum in the diet on reproductive function. The supplementation of EWH can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the reproductive organs, and maintain normal sperm production and quality.

Red Quinoa Hydrolysates with Antioxidant Properties Improve Cardiovascular Health in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

Miguel Lopez-Moreno, Estefania Jimenez-Moreno, Antonio Marquez Gallego, Gema Vera Pasamontes, Jose Antonio Uranga Ocio, Marta Garces-Rimon, Marta Miguel-Castro

Summary: In recent years, quinoa has been proposed as an emerging crop for functional food production. Quinoa hydrolysates obtained from the crop have shown in vitro biological activity. This study aimed to evaluate the beneficial effects of red quinoa hydrolysate on oxidative stress and cardiovascular health in an in vivo experimental model of hypertension. The results revealed that oral administration of red quinoa hydrolysate significantly reduced blood pressure and exhibited antioxidant effects, thereby ameliorating hypertension and its associated complications.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of sepsis on gastrointestinal (GI) motility and histological damage in rats. The results showed that sepsis caused gastroparesis and intestinal motility disorders, as well as damage to multiple organs. Using radiographic methods for the first time, this study provided important information on the time-dependent changes in sepsis-induced GI dysmotility, which is crucial for its management.
