Summary: Four new species of Agaricales from China, namely Hohenbuehelia tomentosa, Rhodophana qinghaiensis, Rhodophana aershanensis, and Spodocybe tomentosum, are described based on their unique morphological features and molecular evidence. Full descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic trees of the four new species are provided in this study.

Summary: The availability of complete gene sets from different organisms allows for identification of unique or lost genes in specific clades. Through simulation, it has been shown that errors in predicting orthologs increase with higher rates of evolution. Empirical data findings are closely replicated by simulated data with errors, suggesting downstream analyses should consider the impact of orthology prediction errors on gene evolution patterns.

Summary: The supergroup Amoebozoa includes a wide diversity of amoeboid organisms and previously enigmatic lineages. By surveying available genomes and transcriptomes, researchers generated a large supermatrix, revealing novel deep level relationships and resolving placement of enigmatic lineages congruent with morphological data. The evolution of Amoebozoa is hypothesized to have been driven by adaptive responses to a changing environment.

Summary: The genomes of three leech species were sequenced and assembled, and it was found that bloodsucking leeches have enhanced auditory sense and genes related to anticoagulation, analgesia, and anti-inflammation. The expanded gene families in bloodsucking leeches may aid in body swelling and storing prey blood. The findings are important for leech culture and strain optimization.

Summary: Two new species of Clitocella have been identified through morphological and phylogenetic investigations. These new species, Clitocella borealichinensis and Clitocella colorata, are distinguished from related species based on their morphology and genetic profiles. Phylogenetic analysis supports the taxonomic position of these new species within the genus Clitocella.

Summary: In vertebrates, the embryonic olfactory epithelium contains progenitors that will give rise to distinct classes of neurons. The homeodomain transcription factor Dbx1 is expressed by neurogenic progenitors in the developing and adult mouse olfactory epithelium. Dbx1-derived lineages contribute to diverse populations of olfactory sensory neurons, vomeronasal sensory neurons, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons.

Summary: Steroidal saponins are specialized metabolites essential for plants' response to stresses and for industrial production of steroid drugs. The origin and evolution of steroidal saponins in plants remain poorly understood. By studying the evolutionary history of steroidal saponin-associated module in plants, this study reveals their origin in Asparagus and Dioscorea and multiple origins in angiosperms. Understanding the distribution and diversity of steroidal saponins contributes to our knowledge of plant resistance to stresses and helps facilitate their industrial production and pharmacological applications.

Summary: Many species of the genus Kalanchoe have evolved the Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthetic pathway for better adaptation to dry environments, although the monophyly of Kalanchoe is still debated. Plastomes of five Kalanchoe species were sequenced and analyzed, revealing similarities in size, GC contents, and gene numbers. Identification of SSRs, long repeats, and highly divergent regions could aid in future phylogenetic studies, while genomic analyses suggest potential roles of certain genes in the adaptive evolution of Kalanchoe to dry environments.

Summary: A new species of wood-inhabiting fungal species, Heteroradulum niveum sp. nov, is reported and described in this study based on morphological and molecular evidence. Phylogenetic analysis using ITS and nLSU gene sequences suggests that H. niveum belongs to the genus Heteroradulum within the order Auriculariales.

Summary: The study investigated the plastome variation in nine species representing five genera of Zingibereae, confirming the relationship between Stahlianthus and Curcuma, and grouping Kaempferia, Boesenbergia, and Zingiber together as the Kaempferia group. Pyrgophyllum was found to be embedded within the Hedychium clade, not allied with the Curcuma clade. The findings demonstrate the power of plastid phylogenomics in improving phylogenetic relationships within Zingibereae.

Summary: Ascomycota account for a significant proportion of named fungal species. By analyzing previously undersampled and uncultured lineages, researchers have discovered a new clade within Pezizomycotina that diverged over 300 million years ago. This clade, known as Lichinomycetes, includes diverse symbionts, endophytes, and mycorrhizae, and challenges traditional taxonomic classifications.

Summary: By clarifying the phylogenetic positions of 'orphan' protists, this study reveals the novel affiliation between major lineages in eukaryotes. The analysis of a 319-gene alignment demonstrates that M. maris represents a basal lineage of Cryptista and proposes a new clade name 'Pancryptista'. Additionally, M. maris is found to be a key taxon for recovering the monophyly of Archaeplastida and the sister relationship between Archaeplastida and Pancryptista.

Summary: SUGARWINs are PR-4 proteins associated with sugarcane defense against phytopathogens, particularly fungal pathogens. While SUGARWIN1 exhibits ribonuclease, chitosanase, and chitinase activities, SUGARWIN2 only displays chitosanase activity. Structural analysis reveals that SUGARWIN1's structure and presence of the catalytic histidine at position 42 make it competent as a ribonuclease.

Summary: This study on Menisporopsis, Multiguttulispora, and Tainosphaeria, saprobes inhabiting decaying plant material, utilized an integrated morpho-molecular characterization to assess their generic concepts and explore phylogenetic relationships. It revealed Menisporopsis as polyphyletic and proposed a new segregate genus, Arcuatospora. The Tainosphaeria complex was resolved into three genera, with Tainosphaeria s. str. accepted with five species and others transferred to new genera. Additionally, a new genus Flectospora was erected for a previously unrecognized fungus nested in the Tainosphaeria clade, based on molecular evidence.
