Summary: This study investigated the expression patterns and functionality of SmLAC25 in Salvia miltiorrhiza. The results showed that overexpression of SmLAC25 increased lignin content in plantlets and hairy roots, but decreased the concentrations of rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid B. Further studies revealed that the overexpression of SmLAC25 promoted lignin synthesis and inhibited salvianolic acid biosynthesis.

Summary: A mixture of 80% Sal-A, 10% Sal-B, and 10% DSS was found to be the most effective in cardioprotection. The inhibition of CK-MB by this mixture was even better than the treatment drugs, while there was no significant difference in the inhibition of cTnI and Myo. This study provides a basis for further research on the active monomers of Salvia miltiorrhiza in the treatment of myocardial infarction.

Among them, C1 exhibited anti-inflammatory activities by activating a7nAchR signaling and subsequently inhibiting STAT3 and NF-KB pathways. This study provided evidence for the clinical application of Danshen and contributed to the development of C1 as a novel drug for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Summary: Overexpression and antisense expression of Sm4CL2 redirected the biosynthesis of salvianolic acids and tanshinones in Salvia miltiorrhiza hairy roots. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that overexpression of Sm4CL2 caused the upregulation of other phenylpropanoid pathway genes and antisense Sm4CL2 expression resulted in the downregulation of other phenylpropanoid pathway genes but activated the expression of terpenoid pathway genes. Protein-protein interaction analysis suggested that Sm4CL2 might interact with PAL, PAL4, CSE, CCoAOMT and SmCYP84A60, and played a key role in the interaction network. The tracking work in this study proved that Sm4CL2 could redirect both salvianolic acids and tanshinones biosynthesis possibly through synergistically regulating other pathway genes.

Summary: This systematic review aims to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in routine cardiac operations, especially cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The results show that MMP levels are significantly correlated with CPB and the gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 are highly released during cardiac surgery with CPB. Increased MMP levels are associated with adverse post-operative outcomes. Future large-scale prospective multicenter randomized clinical trials are needed to investigate the impact of mechanical and pharmacological strategies on the inflammatory response and postoperative outcomes in cardiac surgery and CPB.
