Summary: A case-control study found that urinary phenolic metabolites were associated with type-2 diabetes (T2D) and fasting plasma glucose. Dihydrocaffeic acid and genistein diglucuronide were found to be associated with a lower risk of T2D, while only dihydrocaffeic acid was inversely associated with plasma glucose. This study developed a metabolomics approach to analyze urinary phenolic compounds, providing further understanding of their relationship with T2D.

Summary: Microbiota plays a key role in metabolizing dietary polyphenols, and this study found that a gut bacterium, L. reuteri, is able to convert 5-CQA into various metabolites, including the previously unknown compound esculetin. This oxidative pathway occurring in vivo may have beneficial effects on the gut microbiota and should be further studied.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of rosemary extract and caffeic acid on the polyphenolic and aromatic composition of Monastrell wines, as well as the influence of traditional winemaking methods or incorporating prefermentative maceration. The results show that the application of rosemary extract and caffeic acid increases the color, concentration of anthocyanins, and percentage of polymerized anthocyanins in the wines, with prefermentation maceration leading to higher concentrations of condensed tannins and polyphenols. Furthermore, applying rosemary extract and caffeic acid in the vineyard enhances the concentration of esters and other compounds that improve the aromatic quality of the wines, which is also enhanced by prefermentative maceration.

Summary: This study investigated the saponin profile in the body wall of Holothuria atra and evaluated its alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity. UPLC-HRMS analysis identified 11 compounds, 7 of which were previously unreported. Two triterpene glycosides, desholothurin B (1) and a novel epimer, 12-epi-desholothurin B (2), were isolated and characterized. The Me90 fraction of the H. atra body wall exhibited the strongest alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC50 value 0.158 ± 0.002 mg/mL), surpassing acarbose (IC50 value 2.340 ± 0.044 mg/mL).

Summary: The study shows that the polyphenol-rich extract from A. borbonica, as well as CA, can significantly improve renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis progression in the UUO mouse model through reducing macrophage infiltration, myofibroblast appearance, and extracellular matrix accumulation. Additionally, this effect is associated with the down-regulation of Tgf-beta, Tnf-alpha, Mcp1 and NfkB, as well as the upregulation of Nrf2, and an increased antioxidant enzyme activity for GPX and Cu/ZnSOD.

Summary: We investigated the effects of biochar addition to fertile temperate soil on plant growth and seed quantity and quality of wheat and sunflower. The addition of biochar did not significantly change soil characteristics or affect plant growth and yields. However, it did increase the carbon content of the soil. In terms of seed quality, biochar addition increased the concentration of certain polyphenols in wheat.
