We have calculated the melting temperature of tungsten by two ab initio approaches. The first approach can be divided into two steps. In the first step, we simulate a large coexisting solid and liquid system by the classical embedded-atom method potential and obtain an approximate melting temperature. In the second step, we compute the accurate melting temperature by performing the ab initio free-energy corrections. The second approach is to perform a direct ab initio molecular-dynamics simulation for the coexisting solid and liquid system using the constant particle number, pressure, and enthalpy ensemble. In the second approach, the simulation is carried out entirely using a density-functional theory Hamiltonian, and no other approximations are imposed. However, the simulation is performed using a relatively small supercell. The results obtained from two ab initio approaches can provide a check for each other. Our results show that they are in good agreement with each other and also in reasonably good agreement with the experimental value.

Thomas W. Keal, Alin-Marin Elena, Alexey A. Sokol, Karen Stoneham, Matt I. J. Probert, Clotilde S. Cucinotta, David J. Willock, Andrew J. Logsdail, Andrea Zen, Phil J. Hasnip, Ian J. Bush, Matthew Watkins, Dario Alfe, Chris-Kriton Skylaris, Basile F. E. Curchod, Qiong Cai, Scott M. Woodley

Summary: The transition to exascale computing enables simulations of unprecedented accuracy and complexity. The focus is on materials and molecular modeling that aim for high fidelity in silico experiments on technologically interesting complex systems. This progress presents significant challenges to software, particularly in exploiting parallelism and effectively managing workflows and data on such platforms.

Free Energies of Fe-O-Si Ternary Liquids at High Temperatures and Pressures: Implications for the Evolution of the Earth's Core Composition

Zhigang Zhang, Gabor Csanyi, Dario Alfe, Yigang Zhang, Juan Li, Jin Liu

Summary: The solubility of oxygen and silicon in iron-alloying liquids is crucial in understanding the composition of the Earth's core. This study demonstrates that temperature and pressure play significant roles in determining the solubility, and the nonideality of mixing is important even at high temperatures. The Fe-O-Si liquids greatly enhance the solubility of Si and O when equilibrated with SiO2, which may have influenced ancient geodynamo. Oxygen incorporation may have been necessary to achieve a core composition consistent with geophysical observations.

Towards reconciling experimental and computational determinations of Earth's core thermal conductivity

Monica Pozzo, Christopher J. Davies, Dario Alfe

Summary: The thermal conductivity of Earth's core is a critical parameter that affects core cooling rate, inner core age, and geodynamo power. Recent studies have shown a wide range of values for core thermal conductivity due to challenges in extrapolating to core liquid conditions of pressure, temperature, and composition. This study uses density functional theory calculations to determine the thermal conductivity and resistivity of FeSi alloys, and finds that resistivity increases with Si composition and reduces thermal conductivity. Analysis of possible errors in the calculations shows that experimental and corrected calculations are consistent within uncertainties. Core thermal history models based on the corrected estimates of thermal conductivity support previous findings of inner core formation around 400-700 million years ago and an early molten lower mantle.

Summary: Ice is a molecular crystal with important properties and structural diversity. Recent advances in Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) have enabled accurate calculations of lattice energies for different ice polymorphs. This study presents the DMC-ICE13 dataset, which includes lattice energies of 13 ice polymorphs. Benchmarking different Density Functional Theory (DFT) functionals shows that there is no single functional that performs well for all ice phases.

Interplay among Hydrogen Chemisorption, Intercalation, and Bulk Diffusion at the Graphene-Covered Ni(111) Crystal

Summary: By combining high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal programmed desorption, and density functional theory calculations, we found that hydrogen chemisorption on graphene is temperature-independent between 150 and 320 K, while H intercalation below graphene is limited by an energy barrier of about 150 meV. Moreover, the graphene cover can significantly enhance hydrogen storage in the interface with the bare Ni(111) substrate, especially in heavily hydrogenated samples.

Mechanisms of adsorbing hydrogen gas on metal decorated graphene

Yasmine S. Al-Hamdani, Andrea Zen, Angelos Michaelides, Dario Alfe

Summary: Hydrogen plays a crucial role in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Efficient methods of storing hydrogen are needed to make it a widely used fuel. Graphene, a lightweight layered material, has potential for hydrogen storage but currently binds hydrogen too weakly. In this work, we systematically investigate the adsorption of hydrogen on metal-decorated graphene sheets and identify three different mechanisms of binding. We propose that Kubas adsorption, which can be easily manipulated by an external electric field, has potential for tuning hydrogen adsorption. This study enhances our understanding of hydrogen adsorption and lays the foundation for further research.
