Assessment of inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis using thermography and machine learning: a fast and automated technique

Isabel Morales-Ivorra, Javier Narvaez, Carmen Gomez-Vaquero, Carmen Moragues, Joan M. Nolla, Jose A. Narvaez, Manuel Alejandro Marin-Lopez

Summary: In this study, a machine learning-based computational method was used to automatically assess joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) through thermal imaging of the hands. The method, called Thermographic Joint Inflammation Score (ThermoJIS), was trained using data from patients with different types of arthritis and osteoarthritis, and evaluated based on patients with RA. The results showed that ThermoJIS correlated moderately with ultrasound scores and was able to detect joint inflammation even in patients in clinical remission. This opens up an opportunity to develop new tools for routine detection of joint inflammation.

Impact of previous glucocorticoid therapy on diagnostic accuracy of [18F] FDG PET-CT in giant cell arteritis

J. Narvaez, P. Estrada, P. Vidal-Montal, I. Sanchez-Rodriguez, A. Sabate-Llobera, J. M. Nolla, M. Cortes-Romera

Summary: The impact of prior glucocorticoid treatment on the diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG PET-CT in giant cell arteritis (GCA) was evaluated. A retrospective study showed that 37% of patients previously treated with high-dose methylprednisolone had positive PET-CT results. The positivity rate varied depending on the dose of glucocorticoid administered.

L. Velloso-Feijoo, Juan Luis Alcazar, Jose Pego-Reigosa

Summary: Obstetric complications are more common in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) than in the general population. In this study, it was found that women with pregnancies before the diagnosis of SLE had more pregnancies and a higher rate of term pregnancies compared to those with pregnancies after the diagnosis. Factors associated with pregnancy complications included higher rates of positivity for anticardiolipin IgG and anti-beta-2-glycoprotein IgG/ IgM antibodies, but not lupus anticoagulant.
