Variability in the levels of exosomal miRNAs among human subjects could be explained by differential interactions of exosomes with the endothelium

Kyriacos Felekkis, Myrtani Pieri, Christos Papaneophytou

Summary: Exosomes are small membrane vesicles containing specific RNA transcripts that facilitate cell-to-cell communication. Exosomal miRNAs in blood circulation are considered potential biomarkers for various diseases, but difficulties in clinical use exist due to high variability among individuals.

A bovine miRNA, bta-miR-154c, withstands in vitro human digestion but does not affect cell viability of colorectal human cell lines after transfection

Myrtani Pieri, Elena Theori, Harsh Dweep, Myrofora Flourentzou, Foteini Kalampalika, Maria-Arsenia Maniori, Gregory Papagregoriou, Christos Papaneophytou, Kyriacos Felekkis

Summary: Colorectal cancer is the third most frequent human cancer globally. High consumption of red meat, including beef, is considered a risk factor for its initiation and progression. This study discovered that exogenous bovine miRNAs ingested into the body may have an effect on human cells. The research found that bovine miRNA can still be detected after cooking and digestion, but it does not affect the viability of human cell lines. Further experiments will explore whether bovine miRNA can contribute to the progression of colorectal cancer through its consumption.

Vicky Nicolaidou, Rafaela Georgiou, Maria Christofidou, Kyriacos Felekkis, Myrtani Pieri, Christos Papaneophytou

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is the virus causing COVID-19, and several vaccines have been approved for emergency use. Data on the effects of the vaccines on breast milk are lacking, but studies have shown the presence of antibodies in breast milk after vaccination or natural infection. This study aims to summarize the current understanding of immunoglobulins in breast milk elicited by COVID-19 vaccines and evaluate their virus-neutralizing ability.

Alterations in Circulating miRNA Levels after Infection with SARS-CoV-2 Could Contribute to the Development of Cardiovascular Diseases: What We Know So Far

Myrtani Pieri, Panayiotis Vayianos, Vicky Nicolaidou, Kyriacos Felekkis, Christos Papaneophytou

Summary: This critical review explores the relationship between COVID-19 and CVD, focusing on cardio-specific miRNAs and their association with various CVDs. Limited research suggests that changes in expression levels of COVID-19-related miRNAs may be linked to CVDs. Further research on the relationship between SARS-CoV-2, CVDs, and miRNAs will enhance our understanding and may lead to the use of these miRNAs as biomarkers or therapeutic targets for both pathologies.

Trust in Authorities and Demographic Factors Affect Vaccine Acceptance During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Cyprus

Nikos Konstantinou, Stella A. Nicolaou, Christos Petrou, Myrtani Pieri

Summary: The study adapted a vaccine acceptance scale to the Greek language and examined the relationship between vaccine acceptance and beliefs, personal and family vaccination history, and demographic variables. The findings suggest that younger and less-educated individuals are more vaccine-hesitant, and that trust in authorities influences vaccine acceptance. These results have implications for understanding vaccine hesitancy and shaping public health policies related to vaccinations.

Catalyst-free photo-induced aerobic radical synthesis of lactams from N-alkenyl trichloroacetamides in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as the radical initiator under violet light

Faiza Diaba, Gisela Trenchs

Summary: The first violet light-mediated synthesis of gamma- and delta-lactams from N-alkenyl trichloroacetamides is reported in this paper. The reactions are conducted in tetrahydrofuran or 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as the sole solvent without catalysts or additives, under non-anhydrous conditions in an air atmosphere where the solvent serves as the radical initiator.

Summary: A new 1,2,4-triazole-pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine hybrid system, 6-acylpyrrolo[1,2-a][1,2,4]triazolo[5,1-c]pyrazine, was synthesized using a catalyst-free method. This method involved sequential exposure of pyrrole-2-carbonitrile-derived substrates to DMF-DMA and acyl hydrazide, resulting in the formation of acylated pyrazine and 1,2,4-triazole rings, enabling the installation of various substituents at specific positions on the core skeleton.

Microbial alcohol dehydrogenases: recent developments and applications in asymmetric synthesis

Anju Chadha, Santosh Kumar Padhi, Selvaraj Stella, Sowmyalakshmi Venkataraman, Thangavelu Saravanan

Summary: Alcohol dehydrogenases are enzymes that use cofactors for oxidation or reduction reactions of alcohols or carbonyl compounds. They are utilized in green chemistry and have applications in the production of pharmaceuticals. Recombinant enzymes have solved the challenge of producing purified enzymes in large quantities. Engineered alcohol dehydrogenases have been used in asymmetric synthesis in industry. Various methods have been established for regenerating expensive cofactors to make the enzymatic process more efficient and economically viable.
