Summary: The study found that Inuit people are consuming less country food and more market food, driven by factors such as colonial processes, poverty, changing food preferences and knowledge, and climate change. The health implications of dietary transition are complex, with concerns about micronutrient deficiencies, dietary inadequacy, food insecurity, overweight, obesity, and cultural influences. This review provides insight into the factors influencing Inuit diet and health, which may inform future research and decision-making on food policy and community programs.

Summary: Portion sizes of meals have been increasing and this is related to the onset of obesity. Little research has been done on the influence of body weight on portion size preferences. Factors such as gender, age, hunger, and eating behaviors contribute to portion size choices.

Summary: The history of health research in Inuit communities in Canada has had unethical and colonizing practices, but recent reforms have focused on ethical and community-driven research. This study describes the process of developing a research program guided by the National Inuit Strategy on Research (NISR) to address food security, nutrition, and climate change. The study identifies key elements to support community-led research and provides recommendations for funding agencies to align funding with community priorities.

Summary: Food portion size estimation is a critical task in dietary assessment, and augmented reality technology, specifically the VAPS application, has been developed to aid in this process. The VAPS app allows users to estimate portion sizes by presenting 3D food models in an AR environment. While the health science group performed faster in task completion, both health science and non-health science groups displayed equivalent accuracy in food portion estimation using VAPS.

Summary: Research has shown a clear link between unhealthy diets, low physical activity, and high rates of obesity-related chronic diseases among Nunavut Inuit. By exploring the perspectives of Inuit residents in Iqaluit, researchers identified six main factors influencing healthy diets and physical activity participation. These findings provide valuable insights for designing interventions to reduce the burden of obesity-related diseases in Nunavut communities.

Summary: The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii exposure in Inuit living in Nunavut is higher than that in the US, suggesting clams may serve as a potential route of transmission. The study found T. gondii and Neospora caninum-like DNA in clams harvested in Iqaluit, indicating a possible food safety issue.

Summary: The study reveals the significance of country food in the diet, nutrition, physical health, mental health, and traditional culture of Inuit communities in Nunavut, Canada, while also highlighting the challenges of low-yield periods due to environmental and economic factors. To alleviate the impact of these lean periods on health and community, participants suggested coping strategies such as relying on local food sharing networks and purchasing groceries, as well as recommended increased support for Hunters and Trappers Organizations.

Summary: The Gwich'in and Inuvialuit inhabitants of the Mackenzie Delta have experienced a history of colonialism and environmental transformation. Their current lives are characterized by mobility, mixing, and melting as they adapt to new and old livelihoods. These inhabitants approach uncertain dynamics with improvisation, carrying forward reputable activities and attitudes through new means. Traits like curiosity, playfulness, and risk-taking should be appreciated as skills for inhabiting a volatile world.

Summary: Inuit, the Indigenous Arctic peoples and residents of Nunavut, have the highest global rate of lung cancer. This study characterizes the histologic and genomic profiles of lung cancer in the Inuit population, showing a high incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and an elevated rate of STK11 mutations, distinguishing this group from the North American population.

Summary: Inuit communities in the Circumpolar North have undergone a nutrition transition from traditional country food to market food, leading to concerns about reduced diet quality and increased chronic diseases. Research on the impact of Inuit country food on health during pregnancy and childhood has increased over time, with a focus on environmental contaminants and nutrient adequacy, indicating a need for further exploration of food security and safety in this population.

Summary: Most mothers are aware of the issue of large portion sizes of high energy density (HED) foods, but strategies to reduce portion sizes are not always implemented at home. Inconsistencies were found between observations at home, food diaries, and interview reports for some families. Mothers expressed the need for more support and guidance to decrease the intake of HED foods for their children.

Summary: The study found an association between portion sizes of energy-dense foods and obesity in European adolescents. In males, consuming breakfast cereals and carbonated soft drinks was associated with higher BMI, while in females, consuming bread and rolls was associated with higher probability of obesity. Eating sweet bakery products was linked to a lower probability of obesity in females.
