Summary: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder affecting up to 1% of the worldwide population, and there is a need for novel neuroleptics with higher efficacy and safety. Nitric oxide (NO) appears to be implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, with NO donors like Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) being proposed as promising compounds for treatment. Further research is needed to assess the potential superiority of these compounds over currently used neuroleptics.

Summary: Preeclampsia is a maternal hypertension disorder associated with vascular dysfunction and fetal and placental growth restrictions. Placental ischemia is suggested as the primary trigger of preeclampsia, and sodium nitrite may attenuate its effects by reducing blood pressure, preventing fetal and placental weight loss, counteracting vascular hyper-reactivity, and partially restoring NO and MMP-2 activity.

Summary: Metabolic profiling of cefoperazone-sulbactam-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains revealed inactivation of the pyruvate cycle and nitric oxide biosynthesis as key features, leading to reduced NO levels attributed to low nitrite and electron supply. Exogenous fumarate, NADH, nitrate, and nitrite promoted NO production, enhancing sensitivity to SCF. These findings highlight the interplay between nitrite-dependent NO biosynthesis and the pyruvate cycle in modulating NO metabolism and antibiotic resistance in P. aeruginosa.

Summary: Supplementation with L-arginine has been shown to have beneficial effects in hypertension by increasing nitric oxide formation and enhancing nitrate concentrations, but these effects may be prevented by antiseptic mouthwash. Alteration of the nitrate cycle in the body by mouthwash can impact endothelial dysfunction, antihypertensive effects, and antioxidant effects of L-arginine in hypertensive rats. The findings suggest a new mechanism where antibacterial mouth rinse can affect arterial blood pressure and the development of cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: The application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) as an exogenous nitric oxide (NO) donor can enhance the flowering process in Narcissus tazetta, increasing the flowering percent and size of flowers, improving leaf and flower scape anatomical structure. SNP also triggers the accumulation of photosynthetic pigments and sugars, as well as anthocyanins and phenolic compounds with advanced total antioxidant property. NO does not induce stress in the flowering process and can regulate diverse mechanisms in Narcissus flowering.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) can improve the growth and yield traits of fragrant rice plants and alleviate the damage caused by Cadmium (Cd) stress. The application of NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) can enhance plant growth, photosynthesis, and antioxidant defense system, resulting in increased grain yield and improved quality of fragrant rice.

Summary: Nitrite and nitric oxide are critical nitrogen oxides in the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle, capable of interacting with heme-copper oxidases for enzymatic interconversion and inhibition. While they show similar biochemical properties, they are treated as distinct molecules by bacterial cells and have different effects on enzymes and sensing systems.

Summary: We present the design of novel composite films consisting of cyano-bridged coordination polymers Fe-II[Fe-II(CN)(5)(NO)] or Ag-2(I)[Fe-II(CN)(5)(NO)] grown into a chitosan matrix, which exhibit a slow release of NO radicals under white light irradiation. The characterisation methods confirm that these composites comprise of approximately 50 wt% cyano-bridged coordination polymer microcrystalline particles embedded in chitosan films. Irradiation with white light for 7 days results in a NO radical delivery of 6.5% and 10.6% for {Fe[Fe(CN)(5)(NO)]}(0.55)@C6H11NO4 and {Ag-2[Fe(CN)(5)(NO)]}(0.28)@C6H11NO4, respectively. The rearrangement of cyano-bridged coordination compounds after the departure of NO leads to the formation of Prussian blue or silver Prussian blue analogues, effectively preventing the undesired release of cyanide as a side effect.
