Summary: The study aimed to examine recent trends in diabetes mellitus (DM) and polymyositis (PM), finding that the premature mortality gap has not significantly improved in recent years, indicating a need for better therapeutic interventions.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of pulse intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in patients with dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) during the first year of diagnosis. The results showed that patients who received early pulse IVMP or pulse IVMP + IVIG had a higher hazard ratio for complete clinical response, while the combination of pulse IVMP + IVIG was associated with discontinuation of corticosteroids.

Summary: In this systematic review, the authors investigated the outcomes of pregnancy related to dermatomyositis/polymyositis (DM/PM) and found that in most cases, the disease remained stable or improved throughout pregnancy. However, active DM/PM during pregnancy increased the risk of stillbirth or neonatal death, preterm birth, and other poor outcomes. The mainstay treatments for active DM/PM during pregnancy are glucocorticoids and intravenous immunoglobulins.

Summary: Pregnancy is an important risk factor for autoimmune rheumatic diseases, and this study presents two cases of dermatomyositis (DM) developing during the perinatal period, one resulting in fetal death and the other requiring intensive therapy after miscarriage. Various myositis-specific autoantibodies are associated with pregnancy-triggered DM and PM, with delays in treatment and poor response to corticosteroids potentially leading to adverse fetal outcomes. Early consideration and testing for myositis-specific autoantibodies is recommended in pregnant patients presenting with symptoms of rash, fever, weakness, and cough.

Summary: This retrospective chart review revealed that muscular voice disorders and dysphagia are significantly more common in myositis patients, often as early symptoms of the disease. Early interventions for laryngeal symptoms may lead to better outcomes across all diagnostic categories.

Summary: This retrospective study of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) in a multi-ethnic cohort in Durban, South Africa found that overlap myositis (OM) was the most frequent subtype. African blacks in the cohort were diagnosed at a younger age and had more cardiac abnormalities compared to Indians.

Summary: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are rare and complex connective tissue diseases characterized by inflammatory involvement of skeletal muscles and potential impact on multiple organs. Diagnostic delay can be caused by the rarity and subacute onset of these conditions. Continuous advances in scientific literature contribute to better understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment approaches for IIMs.

Summary: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are a diverse group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the skeletal muscle and muscle weakness. Different subtypes of IIM have been identified based on various factors such as extra-muscular manifestations, immunology, muscle histology, treatment response, and prognosis. This review focuses on the latest literature published in the past year regarding the pathogenesis, classification, treatment, and prognosis of different IIM subtypes.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning model using muscle MRI radiomics features to predict disease groups or autoantibodies in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. The models showed the potential to distinguish between different disease groups, such as PM, DM, and ADM, with better performance using LBP features. However, the accuracy of the models in distinguishing between non-IIM and IIM disease groups was low. Subgroup analysis revealed varying accuracy in predicting autoantibody status.

Summary: We conducted a systematic review to examine the cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), including acute coronary syndrome and stroke. Our review followed the PRISMA protocol and searched three electronic databases from January 1956 to December 2022. Twenty articles were included, showing that most patients with IIMs are middle-aged North American or Asian women with dyslipidemia and hypertension. While the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors is generally low in IIMs, there is a high incidence of acute myocardial infarction. Further research is needed to determine the impact of different variables on cardiovascular risk in patients with IIMs.

Summary: The role of myositis-specific autoantibodies in interstitial lung disease associated with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies was evaluated through a systematic review. It was found that different types of autoantibodies were associated with different patterns of lung disease, highlighting the importance of individualized management based on the specific autoantibody present.

Summary: Calcinosis, a complication of juvenile dermatomyositis, is the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in various tissues. It affects up to 40% of patients with juvenile dermatomyositis and leads to significant morbidity. Effective treatment for calcinosis remains unknown due to a lack of comparative studies. This review aims to summarize recent literature on the pathogenesis and treatment of calcinosis in juvenile dermatomyositis and propose future research areas.

Summary: The study investigated the pathogenesis of inflammatory myopathy with autoimmunity to transcriptional intermediary factor 1 (TIF1)gamma, a nuclear autoantigen. Results showed that immunization with TIF1 gamma induced experimental myositis in wild-type mice, while CD8(+) T cells and type I interferons were found to be required for the development of myositis. This murine model could serve as a valuable tool for understanding dermatomyositis pathologies.

Summary: Active Behcet's patients show higher NLR and PLR ratios, especially in those with active ocular manifestations. The NLR value > 2.58 has 46% sensitivity and 85% specificity for diagnosing active ocular manifestations. There is a modest correlation between NLR and BD activity, with significant relationship of NLR and PLR with ocular features of BD patients.
