Summary: The role of hair analysis in toxicological and clinical monitoring investigations has expanded over the past 20 years, with increasing attention paid to miniaturised approaches for sample preparation. Advances in extraction procedures have focused on minimising toxic organic solvents consumption, making them user-friendly and rapid, and maximising extraction efficiency. Major improvements have been made in well-established microextraction approaches, such as liquid phase microextraction, driven by the use of supramolecular and ionic liquids, while new developments have also been reported in solid phase microextraction.

Summary: Fipronil and its metabolites were found to be more persistent in garlic than the parent pesticide, with degradation rates lower than the parent compound. The total residues of the metabolites exceeded the maximum limits regulated by China and the European Union. The established in vivo tracking method proved to be efficient, convenient, and non-harmful to plants, making it a valuable tool for assessing pesticide use and ensuring food safety.

Summary: Therapeutic drug monitoring is important for drugs with narrow therapeutic windows, as drug concentrations in biological fluids are used for therapy individualization and adherence assessment. Monitoring these drugs is crucial to minimize medical interactions and toxic effects. The development of new monitoring methodologies, such as fabric-phase extractions, is of great interest in this field. This paper aims to critically review solid-phase microextraction techniques for drug detection in therapeutic monitoring situations.

Summary: Solid organ transplantation is a life-saving intervention, but the shortage of organs is a challenge for transplant centers. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been proposed as an effective tool for assessing graft function and analyzing the chemical profiles of preserved organs. This review summarizes the analytical challenges of using SPME in various matrices during the peri-transplant period and discusses its potential as a diagnostic tool in future research.

Summary: The nitrogen and oxygen codoped hierarchically porous biochar (NHPBC) prepared from bovine bone shows excellent enrichment performance for o-xylene and its hydroxyl metabolites, with high enrichment factors and low limits of detection. This study provides a potential method for simultaneous determination of these compounds using NHPBC-coated fiber and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, benefiting the applications of porous carbon in adsorption and contributing to the control and accurate quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Summary: In this study, we used differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) mass spectrometry to successfully analyze five cannabinoid molecules. The formation of ion-solvent adducts during electrospray ionization (ESI) was observed, and the introduction of isopropyl alcohol facilitated rapid separation and quantitation of the cannabinoid isomer sets. Additionally, quantification of carboxylated isomers in cannabis samples was demonstrated.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of SPME for spatially resolved sampling of the human brain, revealing that brain structures are composed predominantly of lipids, with higher concentration and diversity of metabolites in white matter than in grey matter. While the limited number of participants precluded biological conclusions, the results highlight the advantages of the SPME approach and point out areas for improvement in future studies.

Summary: This study introduces a new sorbent called 3D printed solid phase microextraction scaffolds for the extraction of antifungal drugs in wastewater and human plasma. The scaffolds were prepared using a 3D printer and PLA filament. The surface of the scaffolds was chemically modified using alkaline ammonia solution. The method showed good analytical performance for the determination of antifungal drugs.

Summary: A novel deep eutectic solvent-loaded magnetic solid phase extraction (DES-L-MSPE) method was developed for the determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in environmental water samples. The method involved the direct loading of a hydrophobic DES into the pores of magnetic Fe3O4@MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles, which acted as an adsorbent. The method demonstrated good linearity, low limits of detection, high precision, and satisfactory recovery rates.

Summary: Volatolomics provides a noninvasive approach for detecting and monitoring human diseases. In this study, we developed a complete pipeline for untargeted urinary volatolomic profiling, optimized the extraction technique, improved the volatolome coverage, and applied strict quality control measures. The pipeline was successfully used to discriminate pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients from control subjects.

Summary: The present study aimed to develop a simple method for quantitatively determining parabens and bisphenols in human saliva using methyl chloroformate as a derivatizing agent, followed by SPME and GC-QqQ-MS analysis with SRM. Two derivatization strategies were compared and optimized using multivariate analysis, and it was found that the use of methyl chloroformate provided better sensitivity than the classical acetic anhydride derivatization. The performance of the derivatized analytes' sorption process was good using the overcoated fiber (PDMS/DVB/PDMS). The method showed satisfactory results in terms of linearity, limit of quantitation, accuracy, and precision for all parabens and bisphenols, making it a suitable approach for routine biomonitoring purposes.
