Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity of HAV circulating in the Campania Region from 2015 to 2018, identifying IA and IB genotypes. The IA strain was prevalent in 2015, while two IA variants affecting MSM appeared in the following years. IB genotypes were detected in bivalves and water matrices, but not in clinical samples. An integrated surveillance system is recommended as a useful tool for monitoring viral variants and serving as an early warning system.

Summary: The introduction of PCR-MPS technologies has changed the approach to allelic STR typing in forensics. It is found that PCR-MPS could generate isometric drop-ins (IDIs), which may mislead the operator regarding the number of contributors in a forensic evaluation. The molecular features of IDIs and duplicate tests may be useful tools for managing this new class of artifacts.

Summary: A high-resolution typing method was developed for swine leukocyte antigen 3 (SLA-3), identifying 21 alleles with four novel ones, although the allelic diversity of SLA-3 was lower compared to SLA-1 and -2. More SLA-3 alleles were observed in Landrace and Yorkshire breeds, with SLA-3*04:01 being the most widely distributed allele across all breeds. This method aids in analyzing major SLA genes from field samples, enhancing understanding of immune responses and genetic makeup.

Summary: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increases the susceptibility to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in women. A city in Brazil implemented quadrivalent HPV vaccine (4vHPV) for women living with HIV (WLWH) before the public vaccination program. A prospective cohort study was conducted to characterize the genomic diversity and predictors of HPV infection in WLWH. Age, marital status, number of children, number of sexual partners, and CD4 count were identified as protective factors against HPV infection. The use of 4vHPV is beneficial for this population and should be recommended at an age from 26 to 45 years as part of the public vaccination program.

Summary: This study demonstrates the association between circulating cell-free HPV DNA (ccfHPV) and disease severity in cervical cancer. HPV integration status is also correlated with viral load and survival. The findings suggest that ccfHPV presence may contribute to the identification of patients suitable for adjuvant oncological therapy.

Summary: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are the main cause of various types of cancers, and circulating HPV DNA (cHPV-DNA) is a potential biomarker for the management of HPV-driven malignancies. There have been advancements in techniques for analyzing cHPV-DNA for the detection, characterization, and monitoring of HPV-associated cancers. Clinical trials assessing the clinical utility of cHPV-DNA can confirm its potential for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of HPV-related malignancies.

Summary: Molecular typing is widely used in laboratories and clinical settings. The accessibility of next-generation sequencing technologies is limited due to high capital cost. The MinION device from Oxford Nanopore Technologies offers real-time data analysis, rapid library preparation, and low cost per test, but has lower raw accuracy. In this study, a concise protocol for multilocus sequence typing of Staphylococcus aureus using multiplex polymerase chain reaction and the MinION device was developed. The effectiveness of the MinION sequencer in accurate and rapid molecular typing was demonstrated.

Summary: Rapid and accurate diagnosis is crucial in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Antigen detection-based rapid tests have become an alternative to expand testing, but their performance has not been evaluated in many countries. This study evaluated the performance of eight rapid tests available in Brazil and found low sensitivity but high specificity. One of the tests showed moderate agreement. Sensitivity was affected by viral load, but the effect of disease duration was unclear. Despite lower sensitivity, the ease and promptness of rapid tests support their use, especially for patients with high viral loads.
