Summary: This study identified ALOX5 as a potential prognostic therapeutic marker for melanoma. It was found that downregulation of ALOX5 was positively correlated with patient prognosis and acted as an independent prognostic factor. Elevated ALOX5 promoted autophagy and ferroptosis in melanoma cells and in vivo. Mechanistic studies revealed that ALOX5 upregulation activated the AMPK/mTOR pathway and inhibited GPX4 expression, leading to autophagy-dependent ferroptosis. Inhibition of autophagy reduced ferroptosis enhanced by ALOX5, suggesting a synergistic effect between autophagy and ALOX5. The findings of this study provide new targets and methods for the development of melanoma drugs.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Trigonelline (TRL) could improve proliferation of human mesangial cells (HMC), restore autophagy inhibition induced by high glucose through regulating miR-5189-5p and HIF1AN expression. This suggests that TRL may be a new treatment strategy to protect mesangial cells from damage caused by high glucose.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effects of salidroside, the main component of Rhodiola crenulata, in dry eye disease. The results showed that salidroside restored corneal epithelium damage, increased tear secretion, and reduced cornea inflammation. The activation of autophagy and antioxidant pathways played a crucial role in these therapeutic effects. Therefore, salidroside is a promising candidate for dry eye disease treatment.

Summary: This study found that aconitine induces autophagy in H9c2 cardiomyocytes mainly by activating the AMPK/ULK1 signaling pathway mediated by oxidative DNA damage. The antioxidant NAC can alleviate cell damage caused by aconitine, indicating that inhibiting oxidative DNA damage and the AMPK/ULK1 signaling pathway can mitigate autophagic death induced by aconitine.

Summary: This study found that UVB irradiation promoted the expression of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) protein in mouse epidermal cells, and exogenous recombinant human FGF21 (rhFGF21) protected mouse skin tissue against UVB-induced injury by inhibiting inflammatory responses, apoptosis, and promoting autophagy. Moreover, rhFGF21 protected HaCaT cells against UVB-induced apoptosis by inducing AMPK-mediated autophagy.

Summary: Excessive fat accumulation in broiler chickens threatens the poultry industry and consumers' health. Dietary supplements with bioactive ingredients, such as genistein, can effectively reduce fat deposition. This study found that genistein regulates lipid metabolism-related factors expression in chicken hepatocytes, leading to decreased lipid droplets accumulation.

Summary: This study found that SCL expression levels are elevated in obese patients and mice fed a high-fat diet. Furthermore, SCL was found to be associated with skeletal muscle insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. The findings suggest that antagonizing SCL may be a novel therapeutic strategy for managing insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in obesity.

Summary: Pigs use chemical communication, specifically steroid pheromones, for reproductive and other behaviors. These pheromones bind with carrier proteins and trigger a series of activities at the olfactory and endocrine levels. Pig appeasing pheromones also bind with carrier proteins and affect piglet behavior. Different proteins have been identified in the nasal mucus and vomeronasal organ (VNO) of pigs, playing critical roles. The importance of the chemosensory systems, main olfactory systems, and VNO in pigs has been comprehensively reported.
