To improve the physicochemical properties of cyanoacrylate for use as a bioglue, poly L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (poly L-DOPA) was mixed into prepolymerized allyl 2-cyanoacrylate (PAC) to create a modified cyanoacrylate. Mechanical properties such as bond strength, setting time, and crystallization intensity were measured. Human dermal fibroblast cell viability in a medium conditioned with the bioglue was compared to commercial bioglue. Poly L-DOPA created by mixing 5 g of polymethacrylic acid (PMA. Mw: 9,500) and 1.5 g of L-DOPA had more than 2 times the bond strength of PMA alone. In addition, PAC that was heated for 5 min at 150 degrees C was less cytotoxic than other prepolymerized cyanoacrylates. These results indicate that PAC/poly L-DOPA materials can be used widely as adhesives in various fields. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
