Microstructural characterization using XRD and EDS elemental mapping on periclase-added aluminum titanate-corundum functionally-graded materials produced by the multiple infiltration method has been performed to observe the formation of Al2(1-x)MgxTi1+xO5 solid solution in the phase-compositionally changing materials. XRD data and the Rietveld phase analyses showed that the samples contained only aluminum titanate and corundum with depth-varying compositions. Further analysis on the unit cell volume of aluminum titanate supported by EDS elemental mapping image imparted the formation of the solid solution. Study on the decomposition rate of the samples showed that the solid solution decomposes nearly three times slower than the undoped aluminum titanate. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
