Summary: In dissimilar aluminum/steel joints, the formation of Al-Fe intermetallic compounds was found to be influenced by processing conditions and chemical composition. The study revealed that high-pressure processes favor the formation of stable, brittle Al5Fe2 and temperature-favored η-Al5Fe2, which have high thermodynamic driving force and fast atomic diffusivity. Additive manufacturing (AM) was identified as a superior process for achieving desired IMCs in dissimilar materials.

Summary: In this study, an Al-containing ODS steel was coated with a composite Cr-AlN layer by pack-cementation treatment. The Cr-layer was found to be a Cr-Fe solid solution with Cr2C and {Cr,Fe}(2)N1-x particles, while the AlN-layer consisted of AlN particles and α-Fe matrix. The formation of Cr2C and {Cr,Fe}(2)N1-x particles was attributed to the influence of Cr on carbon and nitride in the ODS steel. During high-temperature pack-cementation treatment, N atoms diffused into the ODS steel substrate and reacted with Al, resulting in the formation of AlN particles. The density and size of the AlN particles exhibited a gradient distribution.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different Al concentrations on the structural transformation of pack cementation Zn-Al coatings on AISI 1020 steel. The coatings were analyzed using various techniques to observe their morphology, thickness, structure, and composition. The results showed that the coatings had a laminated structure with an initial Zn-rich layer, followed by an Fe-Zn inner layer and Fe-Al top layer. Elemental analysis revealed a correlation between the formation of voids and the diffusion of Al, Fe, and Zn. The coated specimen exhibited improved mechanical strength and abrasive resistance, and the tribological capability of the Zn-Al coating could be adjusted by varying the Al concentration.

Summary: The addition of Mn and Cr increases the precipitation temperature and changes the morphology of Fe-containing intermetallics from plate-like to cubic shapes. The cubic structure of alpha-AlFeMnCrSi phase provides higher thermo stability, facilitating its sufficient precipitation and separation.

Summary: Sophisticated metallographic techniques were used to identify and study various new features developed at the inner interfaces of hot-dip aluminized C45 carbon steel specimens. The study revealed the presence of multiple intermetallic phases, with Fe2Al5 being the core phase and Fe4Al13 existing at the outermost layer of Fe2Al5. It was also found that the FeAl3 phase did not originate from Fe2Al5, but rather from Fe4Al13. The Gibbs free energies supported the preferential growth of the Fe2Al5 phase.

Summary: A new slurry cementation method was used to produce silicide-aluminide protective coatings on austenitic stainless steel 1.4541, which were then subjected to gas nitriding. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the coatings strongly depended on the phase composition, and the highest resistance was achieved with a high manufacturing temperature.

Summary: Al-containing coatings were prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy using pack-cementation technology. The composition of the feedstock was found to have a significant impact on the phases, microstructure, and thickness of the coatings. Additionally, the addition of pure Al powders prevented active Al ions from penetrating into the magnesium matrix, resulting in a thin Al-containing coating.

Summary: This study investigated the three-dimensional morphologies and growth mechanisms of proeutectic FeAl3 at the Al/Fe interface under different cooling rates using synchrotron X-ray tomography. The results showed that the morphology and growth mechanism of FeAl3 crystals changed with increasing cooling rate, transitioning from faceted polygonal prism to non-faceted rods with radial dendrites in cross section. Furthermore, twinning mechanism was found to play a dominant role in the formation and growth of FeAl3 at higher cooling rates.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the oxidation resistance of Mo-3Si-1B alloy at high temperatures by applying Si/Al pack cementation coatings. The diffusion pack coatings resulted in the formation of Mo(Si, Al)(2) and Mo3Al8 layers along with an Al2O3 protective oxide layer after oxidation tests. The improved oxidation behaviors were attributed to the formation of an Al2O3 oxide layer through Si/Al pack cementation coatings.

Summary: An aluminide coating was applied to T92 steel using pack cementation, resulting in a bilayer structure with an outer FeAl layer and an inner interdiffusion layer. Creep rupture behavior of the coated and uncoated T92 was investigated, revealing a significant decrease in rupture life for the coated samples. The microstructure and fractography analysis of the coated specimen provided insights into the mechanism behind the aluminide-induced deterioration of creep rupture. The formation of columnar grains and the brittle nature of FeAl phase were found to contribute to crack formation during creep, while the phase transformation and needle-like AlN precipitates in the interdiffusion layer promoted crack propagation and creep damage accumulation.

Summary: In this study, cementation steel was subjected to boronizing process at 950 degrees C for different durations. The microstructural changes on the surface of the samples were analyzed using various techniques, and surface roughness, microhardness, and boride layer thicknesses were measured. The results showed that the boride layers consisted of FeB and Fe2B, and had higher hardness values compared to the substrate material.

Summary: The addition of a small amount of vanadium to Fe-Al alloys promotes AlN precipitation and results in substantial surface hardening, more so than the addition of titanium. First principles calculations show that V-N clusters have a stronger attractive interaction with Al atoms compared to Ti-N clusters, explaining the larger hardening induced by vanadium addition. These experiments and calculations suggest that solute clusters not only directly contribute to hardening, but also induce alloy nitride precipitation.
