Summary: Eight new ruthenium complexes were synthesized by modifying ligands or changing metal coordination, and their effects on physical, spectroscopic, and biological properties were studied. The modifications had moderate effects on visible light absorption and singlet oxygen quantum yield, but significant impacts on lipophilicity, cellular uptake, and phototoxicity. This work identified two promising ruthenium complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and provided guidance for designing better photosensitizers.

Summary: A new electrochemical strategy utilizing paired electrolysis and halogen bonding activation has been developed for the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of polychloroalkanes across olefins. By employing readily accessible 4,4-di-tert-butyl bipyridine (dtbpy) as a halogen bonding acceptor, the reduction potential of C-Cl bonds could be positively shifted by 110 mV. This approach allows for a wide substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility, enabling the addition of various terminal and internal alkenes.

Summary: In this study, a series of water-soluble ruthenium-arene complexes were synthesized and characterized. Biophysical and chemical studies showed that these complexes have good anticancer activity. Cell experiments demonstrated that the complexes have stronger toxicity against bladder cancer cells compared to normal cells. This study provides new insights for the rational design of organoruthenium drugs.

Summary: Mixed-ligand tetranuclear supramolecular coordination complexes of Pt(II)-p-biphenyl and bridging ligands derivatives were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure of one complex was determined using single-crystal diffraction methods. The emission profiles of the tetranuclear complexes were influenced by the length of the bridging ligands and solvent polarity.

Summary: A proton-conductive Cu(II) coordination complex was synthesized under hydrothermal condition and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The complex exhibited good proton conductivities at 100 degrees C in the relative humidity range 35-98%.

Summary: A series of cyclometalated complexes of ruthenium (II) with different substituents in the aryl fragment of benzimidazole were synthesized and studied. The results showed that the absorption and emission bands of the complexes red shifted with increasing substituent donation. The excited state lifetime and redox potential of the complexes also decreased, indicating their potential as excellent dyes and photosensitizers.

Summary: Ultrasonic self-assembly method was used to prepare new nano supramolecular coordination polymers (SCPs). The SCPs showed potent anticancer and anti-pathogenic micro-organisms activities, with higher cytotoxicity against specific cancer cell lines and minimal effect on normal cells. They also exhibited antioxidant activities, erythrocyte hemolysis, DNA binding, and antimicrobial activities.

Summary: Plasmonic photocatalysis using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been shown to significantly enhance Lewis acid catalysis for dehydrating sugars to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) under visible light irradiation. The presence of AgNPs amplifies incident light to high intensities and promotes catalytic activity, leading to a new paradigm in photocatalysis applications.

Summary: The absorption and luminescence properties of ruthenium polypyridine complexes can be systematically tuned by adding electron-donating substituents to the ligands. While the anticipated trend in the Ru-N(6) bond length was not observed, noticeable modifications in the measured photophysical properties were observed.
