Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of microplastics and mesoplastics in Pleoticus muelleri from the Bahia Blanca Estuary in Argentina, as well as their growth patterns and condition factors. The results showed that the presence of plastic contamination in the shrimp did not affect their nutritional condition. This research provides valuable information for understanding plastic pollution in seafood.

Summary: The processing of feed items influences their nutritive properties and affects the digestion process and nutrient utilization in animals. Despite marketed as identical products, differences in energy and nutrient digestibility exist between pelleted and extruded laboratory animal diets. Variability in batch consistency can impact experimental results and should be considered in research involving different diet forms.

Summary: The development of green thermoplastic starch nanocomposite films containing cellulose nanofibers extracted from Chrysopogon zizanioides roots showed enhanced tensile strength, tensile modulus, thermal stability, and crystallinity, making them suitable for sustainable packaging. Chrysopogon zizanioides roots have high potential for the polymer industry.

Summary: This study investigated a new approach to utilize and control cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chiral nematic structure as a biodegradable, intelligent material, producing films with potential applications ranging from UV protective packaging to biomedical uses. The addition of a CNC layer into the cross-linked starch/chitosan structure significantly decreased the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the produced films, with different WVP values observed for different helical pitches of the CNC layer. The outer layer of starch/chitosan also exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties against various bacteria strains, which could be beneficial for biomedical applications or antibacterial packaging.

Summary: Pyrodextrins were prepared from acidified waxy and normal tapioca starches under different temperatures and times to investigate their in vitro digestibility and molecular structure. The results showed that pyrodextrin from waxy tapioca starch had higher levels of total and low-molecular weight indigestible carbohydrates compared to normal tapioca starch when prepared at higher temperatures and longer times. Furthermore, changes in molecular structure were observed, with waxy tapioca starch showing a greater tendency for thermal modification and increased non alpha-1,4/alpha-1,6 glucosidic linkages in the pyrodextrins with higher indigestible carbohydrate content.

Summary: Fat content is important for milk quality, but it can be affected by diet composition. Feeding cows with high-starch or high-fat diets can lead to a reduction in milk fat synthesis. This study found that high-starch or high-fat feeding can induce milk fat depression in dairy cows and also affect hindgut fermentation and fiber digestibility.

Summary: The study found that corn and broken rice were the most digestible starch sources for juvenile pirarucu, providing the highest levels of digestible starch and energy. The digestibility of starch was inversely related to starch content and directly related to fiber content of the tested ingredients.

Summary: Feeding young pigs a calcium-deficient diet reduced colonic pH, increased digestibility of calcium and phosphorus, but had no impact on bone mineralization or overall pig performance. Supplementation of nondigestible oligosaccharides had inconsistent effects on colonic pH, and did not affect calcium or phosphorus digestibility, bone mineralization, or overall pig performance.

Summary: Through in vitro analysis, it was found that different Philippine rice varieties had varying levels of resistant starch content and digestibility in cooked and milled forms, which were related to apparent amylose content and glycemic index. These factors were also correlated with the quality and nutritional properties of the rice, and could be useful in developing new varieties with desirable qualities and enhanced nutritional functions.

Summary: The Bacteroidetes phylum is known for its ability to degrade complex carbohydrates, especially in the human gut microbiome. They use PULs and T9SS to rapidly degrade polysaccharides and gain competitive advantages through enzyme secretion and gliding motility.
