Summary: In this study, newly synthesized threonine-derived surfactants were found to form robust, versatile and cytocompatible catanionic vesicles when mixed with gemini surfactants. The formed vesicles exhibit versatile features in terms of size, morphology, surface charge and pH. Furthermore, in vitro assays showed good cytocompatibility of the developed vesicles.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cationic gemini surfactants on the enzymatic activity and conformation of alpha-chymotrypsin (α-CT), finding that the surfactants led to superactivity of α-CT below the critical micelle concentration, and the charge density of headgroups was regulated through electrostatic interactions. Characterization using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) revealed an endothermic enthalpy change, indicating a change in conformation and enzymatic superactivity. Fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the gemini surfactants induced and regulated different protein structures. The findings are significant for understanding the activation and denaturation mechanisms of enzymes.

Summary: A new group of Gemini surfactants based on alkyl benzenaminium with different length in the terminal alkyl groups was synthesized, showing high inhibition efficiencies for carbon steel corrosion and monolayer adsorption on the steel surface without lateral interlink between molecules. The dominant adsorption of the prepared Gemini surfactants is physisorption.

Summary: A biocatalytic route towards N-alkanoyl-N-methylglucamides (MEGAs) and analogues was developed using a modified carboxylic acid reductase construct (CARmm-A). The selective formation of amide bonds was achieved without competing reactions. Reaction optimization resulted in reduced amine concentration requirements, enabling efficient amide formation. The wide substrate scope of CARmm-A was demonstrated through the synthesis of 24 commercially relevant amides.

Summary: This study establishes a combinatorial library composed of 150 molecular weight-defined gemini amphiphiles (GAs) to identify carriers that facilitate robust cytosolic delivery of proteins. The top candidate efficiently translocates a broad spectrum of proteins into the cytosol, primarily through lipid raft-dependent membrane fusion, bypassing the classical endocytic pathway. This study reveals a GA-based small-molecule carrier platform for the direct cytosolic delivery of various types of proteins for therapeutic purposes.

Summary: The anionic wormlike micelles prepared from amino acid surfactant show multiple pH and temperature responses. By adjusting the pH value, the micellar solution can reversibly transform between a low-viscosity emulsion and a viscoelastic fluid. The viscosity of the solution changes reversibly with pH and the gel temperature increases with pH.

Summary: Imidazolium gemini amphiphiles with amide functionalities and chiral properties exhibit excellent surfactant properties, allowing for the fine tuning of their aggregation behavior. The introduction of L-valine-derived gemini surfactants showed promising results in terms of emulsification capacity and controlled fragrance delivery. Dynamic equilibria between aggregates of different sizes were observed, indicating their potential for practical applications in oil/water systems.

Summary: A novel type of vesicles (VT/G) composed of Gemini cationic surfactant (G12-8-12) and TPE-2OH, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence probe, were prepared. The vesicles showed good binding and bactericidal effects on bacteria due to the compression of the interlayer and the generation of active substances. This new strategy has potential applications in bacteria detection and killing.

Summary: It has been found that the incorporation of d-alpha-amino acids and N-methyl-l-alpha-amino acids with negatively charged sidechains into nascent peptides is less efficient compared to those with neutral or positively charged ones. This is due to the low binding affinity of their aminoacyl-tRNA to EF-Tu, a translation factor. To overcome this issue, two strategies were adopted: the use of an EF-Tu variant called EF-Sep and reinforcement of T-stem affinity using a chimeric tRNA. These strategies successfully enhanced the incorporation efficiencies of the negatively charged amino acids and demonstrated ribosomal synthesis of macrocyclic peptides containing multiple d-Asp or (Me)Asp.

Summary: Gemini surfactants formed by cystine and decanoic acid were studied for their aggregation behavior in the presence of different metallic salts. TEM and SAXS measurements showed a change in morphology of the aggregates in the presence of copper or silver ions. Reduction of copper and oxidation of cystine were observed through EPR and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The mixture of SDDC:CuSO4/10:1 exhibited the most efficient antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria.

Summary: Trisubstituted 1,3,5-tri(benzimidazolyl)benzene derivatives were synthesized from l-alanine, l-valine, d-valine and glycine, and their self-assembling behavior and stimuli-response in solution and gel states were evaluated. The compounds formed H-aggregates via intramolecular hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions in nonpolar solvents such as CHCl3, whereas collapse of the aggregates was confirmed by MeOH addition. Rheological analysis and morphology observation revealed the formation of a fibril like structure by further assembling of aggregates at a high concentration in CHCl3.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficient preparation methods of encapsulated gemini surfactants using alginate and gelatin capsules. The effectiveness of the encapsulation is confirmed through infrared spectra analysis and scanning electron microscope imaging. Gemini surfactants in encapsulated form show promising potential as corrosion inhibitors and antimicrobials, with the ability to protect the active substance and control release.
