The use of sodium montmorillonite clay as a stabilizer in the surfactant-free emulsion polymerization of n-butyl acrylate/styrene (n-BA/S) was assessed. It was shown that the use of the clay alone did not yield the desired armored latex particles. A functional comonomer, that is, a phosphate ester of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate, was used to improve the interaction between the polymer and clay, thus allowing for the clay platelets to adhere to the surface of the polymer particles. The morphology of the films obtained for these two different scenarios was similar and resembled a honeycomb structure. However, their water-resistance properties differed drastically. The water absorption and water vapor permeation rate were much lower in the hybrid n-BA/S/clay films in the presence of the functional monomer than in the films obtained without the functional monomer.

Incorporation of a Coumarate Based Corrosion Inhibitor in Waterborne Polymeric Binders for Corrosion Protection Applications

Diulia Quites, Jose Ramon Leiza, Daniele Mantione, Anthony Somers, Maria Forsyth, Maria Paulis

Summary: This study optimized the incorporation of organic corrosion inhibitors into waterborne coatings and successfully incorporated p-coumaric acid into polymeric binders. The anticorrosion performance of the coatings was tested and compared using electrochemical analysis.

Taking Advantage of Phosphate Functionalized Waterborne Acrylic Binders to Get Rid of Inhibitors in Direct-to-Metal Paints

Stefano Chimenti, Marco Cerra, Tito Zanetta, Jose Ramon Leiza, Maria Paulis

Summary: Two phosphate functionalized acrylic binders were formulated to produce direct-to-metal paints without corrosion inhibitors. The performance of both paints, formulated without corrosion inhibitors, exhibited superior water sensitivity, mechanical stability, adhesion, and resistance against corrosion in high humidity, accelerated weathering, and salt-spray tests. Additionally, the paint based on an amorphous copolymer binder showed significantly better performance in the salt spray test compared to the DTM paint formulated with corrosion inhibitors.

Understanding the effect of MPEG-PCE's microstructure on the adsorption and hydration of OPC

Inaki Emaldi, Edurne Erkizia, Jose Ramon Leiza, Jorge S. Dolado

Summary: Polycarboxylic ethers or polycarboxylate (PCEs) are commonly used superplasticizers in construction, but their microstructure-property relationship is not fully understood. A theoretical model has been proposed to explain the effect of PCE's microstructure-conformation on its adsorption onto cement particles and cement hydration time. Experimental investigation shows that PCEs with different side chain lengths have different dispersing mechanisms. The theoretical model's prediction is mostly accurate, except for PCEs with the shortest side chains.

Thiol-ene emulsion polymerization using a semi-continuous approach

Fabian Wenzel, Urko Larranaga, Miren Aguirre, Jose R. Leiza

Summary: The thermally initiated thiol-ene emulsion polymerization of DAP diene and EDDT dithiol monomers was studied in batch and semibatch processes. The stability of the latexes was limited in both processes, leading to aggregation phenomena. Changing the diene monomer to DATP resulted in smaller particles and narrower distribution without aggregation. Partial substitution of the dithiol by a more water-insoluble trithiol affected nucleation, yielding smaller particles. The synthesized polythioether polymers showed low glass transition temperatures and crystalline films.

Fabrication of Multifunctional Composite Nanofibers by Green Electrospinning

Edurne Gonzalez, Aitor Barquero, Maria Paulis, Jose Ramon Leiza

Summary: The present work demonstrates the use of green electrospinning to create composite nanofibers containing inorganic nanoparticles. By encapsulating the nanoparticles in polymer particles through miniemulsion polymerization and spinning them with polyvinyl alcohol as a template, it is possible to achieve excellent distribution and encapsulation of the nanoparticles without altering the nanofibers' size. This technology allows for the incorporation of multiple types of nanoparticles, making it a promising technique for sensing and biomedical applications.

Rationalizing the Effect of the MAA/PEGMA Ratio of Comb-Shape Copolymers Synthetized by Aqueous Free-Radical Copolymerization in the Hydration Kinetics of Ordinary Portland Cements

Sara Beldarrain, Aitor Barquero, Guido Goracci, Jorge S. Dolado, Jose Ramon Leiza

Summary: In this study, Methacrylic acid-co-poly(ethylene glycol methacrylate) (MAA-co-PEGMA) copolymers with uniform composition but different charge-density or side chain lengths were synthesized by free-radical copolymerization. The effect of these copolymers on the hydration kinetics of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was analyzed. It was found that increasing the PCE concentration led to a delay in hydration. Moreover, the delay was longer with higher MAA/PEGMA ratios or shorter side chain lengths of PEGMA. The hydration delay was proportional to the carboxylate dosage and all PCEs fit in a master curve, indicating a correlation between the microstructure of the PCEs and the hydration delay of commercial OPC.

Synthesis of Waterborne Anticorrosive Coatings Based on The Incorporation of Phosphate Groups to Polyurethane-Acrylate Hybrids

Aitor Barquero, Oihane Llorente, Daniela Minudri, Maria Paulis, Jose Ramon Leiza

Summary: Solvent-free waterborne polyurethane-poly(meth)acrylate hybrid dispersions are synthesized for formulating anticorrosive paints. A phosphate containing polymerizable surfactant, Sipomer PAM 200, is incorporated to enhance the anticorrosive protection by forming an iron phosphate passivation layer. The effectiveness of this passivation layer is evaluated in different corrosive environments.

Styrene-based polymerised high internal phase emulsions using monomers in the internal phase as co-surfactants for improved liquid chromatography

Christopher T. Desire, R. Dario Arrua, Fotouh R. Mansour, Stefan A. F. Bon, Emily F. Hilder

Summary: Poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-based monoliths were prepared using water-in-monomer high internal phase emulsions. The inclusion of water-soluble monomers improved the homogeneity of the monoliths and enhanced their chromatographic performance. The monoliths grafted with PEGDA showed superior separation capabilities for more complex mixtures, while the monoliths grafted with AAm exhibited increased hydrophilicity for retaining polar analytes.
