Summary: Calixarenes have been explored for the design of anticancer agents, leading to the discovery of a series of promising carbonyl amide derivatives with compound 5h showing superior inhibitory effects on lung adenocarcinoma and breast cancer cells while demonstrating low toxicity to normal cells. Mechanism studies indicated that compound 5h could induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, suggesting its potential as a novel anticancer drug.

Summary: The C4P2T molecule was used as a sensor active layer for the detection of VOCs. The LB thin film layer was monitored using UV-visible spectroscopy and SPR techniques, and the film properties were characterized using SPR measurements. The C4P2T LB thin film showed a fast response time and a recovery time, making it suitable for VOCs sensor applications. The sensor exhibited sensitivity and selectivity towards specific VOCs.

Summary: Bacteria have become more resistant to current antimicrobial drugs. New antimicrobial drugs are urgently needed to combat drug-resistant pathogens. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of calix[4]arene derivatives as antibacterial agents, mimicking the structure and functions of antibacterial peptides. After introducing cationic hydrophilic moieties and optimizing the structure, we identified a lead compound (16) with excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, low toxicity to mammalian cells, and poor hemolytic activity. The mechanism studies showed that compound 16 can directly destroy bacterial cell membranes, leading to bacterial death and low potential for bacterial resistance development.

Summary: Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is a green and sustainable separation technology, and high-performance OSN membranes are crucial in chemical separation. This study developed highly perm-selective thin-film composite (TFC) OSN membranes using macrocyclic molecules and interfacial polymerization, which demonstrated ultra-thin selective layer thickness and permanent intrinsic microporous structure, enabling high perm-selectivity and molecule sieving.

Summary: The study found that the self-assembly of synthesized macrocycles is mainly driven by hydrophobic interactions of their hydrophobic chains and π-π stacking interactions between aromatic rings. Long-chain viologen macrocycles not only have low hemotoxicity and selective cytotoxic activity, but also can bind therapeutic molecules, making them promising drug nanocontainers.

Summary: In this study, dewetting of a thin polymer bilayer consisting of a stacked polystyrene (PS) film on top of a topographically patterned poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bottom layer on a nonwettable substrate results in a myriad of partially or fully ordered patterns. The local thicknesses of the thinnest parts of both layers collectively influence the evolution pathway and extent of ordering in the final dewetted features. Different values of h(R-PMMA) and h(T-PS) lead to different morphologies of ordered structures during the dewetting process.

Summary: A large-scale and low-cost method for producing highly ordered honeycomb-patterned film using commonly commercialized polymers was proposed. The method allows for preparation of uniform and highly ordered honeycomb structures in normal indoor environments without the need for specific relative humidity or stabilizers. By controlling the solvent-nonsolvent ratio and experimental processing conditions, pore size can be adjusted. This approach can be applied to various shapes and has significantly improved hydrophobic properties.

Summary: This study focuses on the lower rim effect of calix[4]arenes-based lipophilic phosphonate thin films in volatile organic vapor sensing applications, with or without a tert-butyl group. The research found that the CTPO4 thin film has higher surface roughness and contact angle compared to the CPO4 thin film, leading to a stronger response to VOCs.

Summary: In this study, a new class of polystyrene-based ionomers with sub-nanometer-sized, sulfonated macrocyclic calix[4]arene-based pendants (PS-calix) was reported. The conductivity of the PS-calix film was found to be 13 times higher than that of the state-of-the-art ionomer, Nafion. PS-calix also showed improved proton conductivity when interfacing with Pt nanoparticles, indicating its potential in catalyst ink. The sub-nanometer-sized calix[4]arene cavities in PS-calix created unique water/ion transport pathways, resulting in faster water diffusion compared to bulk water and water confined in Nafion films.

Summary: The study demonstrates the formation of self-organized nanostructures in CoGa0.8Mn1.2O4 thin films through thermal annealing. Post-annealing in air promotes crystalline phase separation into tetragonal and cubic phases, resulting in the formation of a nano-zigzag pattern. The structural and magnetic properties of the nanostructured films strongly depend on the annealing time due to the inter-diffusion of Ga and Mn ions.

Summary: A honeycomb column thin-walled structure (HCTS) was designed and fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM). Numerical simulation and experimental results showed that the HCTS had higher resistance to deformation and loading force compared to equivalent solid thin-walled structures (ESTS). The numerical simulation can provide theoretical guidance for the manufacturing process of HCTS.
