The aims of the experiment, conducted over three years in the Central Europe field conditions, were (1) to investigate the effect of growing period (plantings in the middle and at the end of August: 1st and 2nd term, respectively) on yield and chemical composition of the non-heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. chinensis) cultivars 'Taisai', 'Pak Choy White', and 'Green Fortune', and (2) to develop regression models to evaluate the changes in crop yields as a function of weather conditions. A highest marketable yield was obtained from 'Taisai' (65.71 and 77.20 t.ha(-1)), especially in the 2nd term of production. Low yield, observed for 'Pak Choy White' was due to its premature bolting. Almost 39% (1st term) and 70% (2nd term) of plants of this cultivar formed inflorescence shoots before harvest. The highest dry matter level was observed in the leaf petioles of 'Taisai', while 'Green Fortune' was the most abundant of carotenoids and L-ascorbic acid. The content of soluble sugars was the lowest for 'Pak Choy White'. In a phase of harvest maturity, more of the analyzed constituents were gathered by plants from earlier plantings, and differences were as follows: 4.7% (dry matter), 26.3% (carotenoids) and 22.1% (L-ascorbic acid), in comparison to 2nd term of production. Significant increase of soluble sugars level was observed for plants from later harvest. The regression model for marketable yield of Chinese cabbage cultivar 'Taisai' as a function of maximum air temperature can predict the yield with accuracy 68%. The models for yield or bolting of 'Pak Choy White', based on extreme air temperatures and sunshine duration, were more precise (98%). It should be pointed out that Taisai could be recommended for later growing period in Central Europe conditions with regard to maximum yield potential. 'Green Fortune' was notable for its uniform yielding. To obtained plants of higher nutritional value, earlier time of cultivation should be suggested. Described models can be successfully applied for an approximate simulation of Chinese cabbage yielding.

Effect of Sodium Selenate and Selenocystine on Savoy Cabbage Yield, Morphological and Biochemical Characteristics under Chlorella Supply

Marina Antoshkina, Nadezhda Golubkina, Pavel Poluboyarinov, Liubov Skrypnik, Agnieszka Sekara, Alessio Tallarita, Gianluca Caruso

Summary: Biofortification of Brassica oleracea with organic and inorganic selenium resulted in stronger growth stimulation and increased levels of chlorophyll and ascorbic acid. However, the biofortification effect was lower for organic selenium compared to inorganic selenium. Supply of Chlorella increased the efficiency of biofortification with inorganic selenium but had no effect on organic selenium.

Effects of Plant Biostimulation Time Span and Soil Electrical Conductivity on Greenhouse Tomato 'Miniplum' Yield and Quality in Diverse Crop Seasons

Alessio V. V. Tallarita, Lorenzo Vecchietti, Nadezhda A. A. Golubkina, Agnieszka Sekara, Eugenio Cozzolino, Massimo Mirabella, Antonio Cuciniello, Roberto Maiello, Vincenzo Cenvinzo, Pasquale Lombardi, Gianluca Caruso

Summary: Biostimulants, specifically protein hydrolysate (PH), have a significant impact on tomato yield, quality, and elemental composition. The study found that the number of biostimulant applications and soil electrical conductivity influenced fruit yield, dry residue, Brixo, and antioxidant status of tomatoes. PH treatment showed a higher beneficial effect on fruit antioxidant status in winter compared to summer. Furthermore, PH affected the concentration of mineral elements in the tomato plants, with some elements increasing and others decreasing depending on the treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the nutritional value of tomatoes by using different types of fertilization. It was found that biological fertilizer had a better effect on antioxidant activity, lycopene, and β-carotene content compared to chemical fertilizer. The results indicate that tomato cultivars react positively to microbiological fertilization and can produce nutritious fruits under sustainable management.

Effect of Foliar Application of Sodium Selenate on Mineral Relationships in Brassicaceae Crops

Nadezhda Golubkina, Marina Antoshkina, Ludmila Bondareva, Agnieszka Sekara, Erica Campagna, Gianluca Caruso

Summary: The study found that the foliar application of sodium selenate had a significant impact on the elemental content in Brassica oleracea plants. Different varieties of cabbage showed varying levels of element accumulation under selenium supply, with broccoli and cauliflower exhibiting the lowest mineral content and number of elemental changes, while Savoy cabbage had the highest number of mineral changes.

Petals of different ornamental rose cultivars as a rich source of bioactive compounds for functional foods

Andrzej Kalisz, Zofia Wlodarczyk, Monika Bieniasz, Sylwester Smolen, Jarmila Neugebauerova, Bozena Szewczyk-Taranek, Bozena Pawlowska

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the profile of bioactive compounds in petals of 23 cultivars of garden roses. Flowers, especially those with red petals, were found to be a rich source of phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. The chlorogenic acid content was not influenced by flower color, while white cultivars and those with pale colors had the highest level of hydroxychloroquine. Petals of all cultivars exhibited high levels of vitamin C and low levels of vitamins B. Glutathione was found in high levels in most examined roses. The presence of hydroxychloroquine in plant material was detected for the first time. Soluble oxalates content was very low. The high levels of phytochemicals in rose flowers make them excellent candidates for the food and nutraceutical industry. Some cultivars, such as 'Chorus', 'Abraham Darby', 'Graham Thomas', 'Mary Rose', 'Morning Jewel', 'Moje Hammarberg', are particularly rich sources of valuable bioactive ingredients such as phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and vitamin C.

The shaping of onion seedlings performance through substrate formulation and co-inoculation with beneficial microorganism consortia

Robert Pokluda, Lucia Nedorost Ragasova, Milos Jurica, Andrzej Kalisz, Monika Komorowska, Marcin Niemiec, Gianluca Caruso, Maciej Gastol, Agnieszka Sekara

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of consortia composed of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM) on onion cultivation. The results showed that AMF can promote onion root growth and plant performance, especially in substrates rich in organic matter. Co-inoculation of AMF and PGPM can accelerate the formation of arbuscular mycorrhiza. Increased antioxidant activity and glutathione peroxidase (GPOX) activity of onion roots reflected the successful induction of plant acclimatization response.

Changes in Soil Sulfate Sulfur Content as an Effect of Fertilizer Granules Containing Elemental Sulfur, Halloysite and Phosphate Rock

Aneta Lisowska, Barbara Filipek-Mazur, Andrzej Kalisz, Olga Gorczyca, Agnieszka Kowalczyk

Summary: Due to sulfur shortage in soil and increasing global population and food consumption volume, the demand for sulfur as an important nutrient is expected to rise. This model incubation study evaluates the effects of fertilizer granule applications containing sulfur, halloysite, and phosphate rock on sulfur and phosphorus content, dehydrogenase activity, and pH value of two soils with different characteristics. Advanced statistical analysis methods, such as regression modeling and multivariate grouping, were used to analyze the relationships between soil parameters and changes caused by the experimental factors. The application of fertilizer granules had limited impact on phosphorus content, dehydrogenase activity, and soil acidity.
