Summary: This large case-control study examined the association between domestic violence (DV) and self-poisoning in Sri Lanka. The results showed that exposure to at least one type of DV within the previous 12 months was strongly associated with self-poisoning for both men and women. Women were most strongly associated with physical violence, while emotional abuse showed the highest risk for men. The study also found that 38% of self-poisoning cases in women and 22% in men could be attributed to DV.

Summary: The study investigated the association between experiencing parental emigration in childhood and hospital presentations for self-poisoning in adulthood. The results showed no statistical evidence of an increased risk of self-poisoning in individuals who experienced parental emigration during childhood. Further research using longitudinal data is needed to understand any potential lasting effects.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of pesticide poisoning patients admitted to two Malaysian hospitals and the early impact of the national paraquat ban implemented on 1st January 2020. The majority of pesticide poisoning cases were self-poisoning, with a higher proportion among the Indian ethnic minority. Domestic interpersonal conflicts were the most common socio-environmental stressors, and paraquat poisoning accounted for the majority of fatalities. After the paraquat ban, there was a decrease in the proportion of pesticide poisoning cases using paraquat and a slight reduction in overall case-fatality.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the prevalence of childhood sexual experiences (CSEs) and intimate partner violence (IPV) among transgender women (TW) and their association with lifetime suicidal ideation. The results showed that 14.2% of TW reported CSEs under 18 years old and 44.9% reported experiencing IPV in adulthood. Both CSEs and any form of IPV were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Suicide prevention efforts for TW should focus on those with physical and verbal IPV.

Summary: This study investigates the trends of domestic violence in India at national and sub-national levels, highlighting the high prevalence and limitations in data quality for surveillance. The findings reveal an increasing rate of cruelty by husband or relatives, with significant variations among states. Underreporting is observed for certain crime categories, and most states show stagnant reporting over the years. The heavily tabulated format of data limits the exploration of domestic violence patterns and hampers policy actions. Urgent actions are required to improve the robustness of data and enhance the information available to effectively address domestic violence against women in India.

Summary: In India, between 2014 and 2021, there was an increasing trend in hanging suicides and insecticide poisoning suicides among males and females, while self-immolation rates decreased. These trends were observed across different regions. Restricting access to suicide methods is an effective suicide prevention approach.

Summary: Nepal recorded 5754 suicides in 2018-19, with over 24% of these suicides by poisoning, mainly from ingestion of highly concentrated agricultural pesticides. Despite a ban on methyl-parathion in 2006, it remains the key pesticide responsible for pesticide self-poisoning in Nepal. The country has seen a significant increase in suicide rates since 1980, with fatal pesticide self-poisoning increasing by 13-fold.

Summary: The use of illicit and non-illicit substances in suicides is common, and toxicological data can help understand the mechanism behind deaths. This systematic review found significant differences in substance use between low-income and Western countries, with rural areas and Asian countries primarily using pesticides as poison, while illicit drugs and medically prescribed drugs being the leading cause of self-poisoning suicides in Western countries. Future research should focus on the correlation between social, medical, and demographic characteristics and autopsy findings to highlight risk factors and implement tailored prevention programs globally.

Summary: This study found that parenthood has a protective effect on suicide, especially in young adults, but this protection weakens with increasing age and becomes similar between sexes in older age groups. Regardless of marital status, parents have a lower risk of suicide, except for married men who only have a lower risk above the age of 55.

Summary: Higher levels of men's family carework are associated with lower suicide mortality, especially among men and under high-unemployment conditions. In countries where men reported more family carework, higher unemployment rates were not associated with higher male suicide rates. However, in countries where men reported less family carework, higher unemployment was associated with higher male suicide rates.
