Summary: Blended films made from polyvinyl alcohol and pinto bean starch were prepared and used to fabricate antimicrobial packaging films in this study. Cinnamon essential oil was chosen as the most efficient essential oil, and by adding CEO, significant improvements were observed in the barrier, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties of the films. The CEO-loaded films showed better efficacy in controlling Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gram-negative bacteria, and they have potential applications in food and biomedical fields as biodegradable functional films.

Summary: A green approach for the preparation of starch-based composite nanofibers using electrospinning was developed. The addition of co-blending polymer PVA was attempted to improve the CMS solution spinnability. The study successfully obtained smooth, continuous, and defect-free nanofibers from the blend of CMS/PVA weight ratios of 10:90 to 80:20.

Summary: This study explores a new method of producing thermoplastic starch (TPS) via extrusion and injection at a large scale, using tannin and glycerol simultaneously. The results show that the synergistic effect of tannin and glycerol improves the mechanical strength and elongation at break of TPS. The introduced tannin also enhances the thermal stability and antibacterial activity of TPS.

Summary: Starch/PVA degradable straws with different PVA contents were prepared using the twin-screw extrusion method. The straws with 40% PVA exhibited the highest dispersion uniformity and molecular interactions, resulting in improved mechanical properties and water resistance. Compared to the straws without PVA, the swelling volume of the 40% PVA straws decreased significantly, and the diameter strength and water absorption were greatly increased.

Summary: Bio-composites were fabricated with kenaf and starch as filler and matrix, and PVA and PEG as plasticizers. Acetylation of kenaf improved surface adhesion and hydrophobicity, while starch enhanced biodegradability. Plasticizers had minimal effect on physical properties, but slightly improved thermal stability of acetylated kenaf composites. Moisture in soil increased biodegradability by 80%, showing potential for replacing synthetic polymers and mitigating environmental pollution.
