Summary: Chronic joint pain is a significant healthcare challenge with a large socioeconomic burden. This study investigates the role of MMP-1 in mediating pain in synovial joints and its effects on the collagen network, biomechanical response, and neuronal regulation of the capsular ligament. The findings suggest that MMP-1 may play a crucial role in neuronal signaling in joint pain and that MMP-1 presence in the joint space could lead to altered responses to loading. These findings have implications for the development of new treatments for degenerative joint pain.

Summary: This study investigated the antiarthritic potentials of Src kinase inhibition in both in vivo and in vitro settings. The results showed that inhibition of Src kinase reduced the expression of arthritis-related genes and suppressed the production of key proteins in FLSs. These findings suggest that Src kinase inhibition may be a candidate for further research in rheumatoid arthritis.

Summary: Scleral hypoxia leads to upregulation of HIF-1α, which contributes to the progression of myopia. This study found that HIF-2α induces myopia development by promoting MMP-2 expression and collagen degradation, while the role of HIF-1α is unclear.

Summary: This study developed a stable and tissue-activated variant of CTLA4Ig, called Alb-CTLA4Ig, which can effectively suppress tissue inflammation in situ without inhibiting the antimicrobial responses. This treatment showed similar efficacy to conventional CTLA4Ig in treating collagen-induced arthritis in mice.

Summary: Urine-based cytology is commonly used for clinical diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma (UC), but its sensitivity is limited for low-grade UC detection. This study found that CDCP1 expression was significantly higher in UC patients, especially those with low-grade UC, compared to normal individuals. CDCP1 expression in urinary UC cells was also detected using immunocytochemistry. The overexpression and knockdown of CDCP1 in UC cells influenced migration ability, suggesting its potential role in the malignant progression of UC.

Summary: This study examines the presence and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in Leishmania parasites, particularly in two different Leishmania species, L. amazonensis and L. braziliensis. The results show that MMP-9 has significantly higher gelatinolytic activity in L. amazonensis compared to L. braziliensis. The study suggests that MMP-2 and MMP-9 may play a role in the infection dynamics of these Leishmania species and could be potential markers for severe leishmaniasis and therapeutic targets.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of paclitaxel therapy on the skin of breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Neurological examinations, quality of life questionnaires, and skin punch biopsies were conducted, revealing no significant difference in intraepidermal nerve fiber (IENF) density between control and CIPN patients. However, RNA sequencing and immunostaining showed upregulated MMP-13 expression and ultrastructural changes in collagen and basement membrane structures.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) play significant roles in solid tumor invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis, while their role in hematological malignancies is less understood. Recent studies have shown correlations between gelatinases and hematological malignancies, leading to the development of potential inhibitors for these conditions.

Summary: This study found that the plasmatic levels of MMPs and TIMPs were significantly altered in patients with CIDP, with higher concentrations of MMP-9, downregulation of TIMP-1, and lower concentration of MMP-2. These new biomarkers may have potential usefulness in the clinical setting and further studies are needed to confirm their utility.

Summary: Breast cancer, estimated as one of the most prevalent malignancies globally, poses a significant healthcare burden with incident cases on the rise. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a crucial role in breast carcinogenesis through various mechanisms, and phytochemicals have the potential to combat MMPs-induced breast cancer. The current systematic review focuses on natural lead molecules that can deter MMPs-provoked breast cancer, aiming to address limitations, challenges, and future directions in using these compounds for the management of the disease.

Summary: Liver fibrosis is a consequence of chronic liver injuries, characterized by the imbalance of extracellular matrix production and degradation. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are crucial in collagen synthesis and lysis. This article reviews experimental studies on liver fibrosis based on MMPs/TIMPs and highlights the potential of targeting this interaction as a therapeutic strategy for hepatic fibrosis. The article also summarizes drugs, including natural products, that have been found to reduce liver fibrosis by altering the ratio of MMPs/TIMPs.

Summary: Skeletal muscle atrophy refers to the wasting or decrease in muscle mass caused by various factors. Recent evidence suggests that posttranslational modifications, such as acetylation and phosphorylation, play important roles in contractile dysfunction and muscle wasting. Inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) can attenuate muscle atrophy and protect against muscle damage. Phosphorylation of protein kinase C delta (PKCd) is associated with muscle atrophy, and HDAC inhibitors can restore or increase PKCd phosphorylation levels, providing protection against muscle atrophy.

Summary: O-GlcNAcylation, mediated by O-GlcNAc transferase, plays a crucial role in osteoclast differentiation by regulating gene expression and cellular factor translocation. Inhibition of O-GlcNAcylation may reduce osteoclast differentiation and targeting O-GlcNAcylation could be a potential therapeutic approach for bone diseases.

Summary: This study examined the effects of Soyeom pharmacopuncture in mouse models of acute gout. The results showed that Soyeom pharmacopuncture reduced foot edema and inhibited the production of inflammatory markers, as well as decreased inflammatory gene expressions in the NF-kB pathway. These findings suggest that Soyeom pharmacopuncture may be a new solution for other inflammatory diseases.
