Summary: Vitamin B12 acts as a partner for enzymatic reactions in humans and its deficiency may increase the risk of neurological illnesses, heart disease and cancer. This study investigated the effect of vitamin B12 on the genotoxicity caused by styrene oxide, a metabolite of styrene. The results suggest that vitamin B12 can protect DNA from genotoxic effects, potentially reducing the risk of carcinogenesis.

Summary: Alkenylbenzenes are potentially toxic compounds found in food, especially in flavorings, requiring constant monitoring due to concerns about their health effects. The challenge in determining alkenylbenzenes in food lies in the complex sample matrices and low amounts present. Gas and liquid chromatography are commonly used separation techniques, with detection methods including flame ionisation and mass spectrometry.

Summary: Although micronuclei are widely used as biomarkers for genotoxic damage, their biological consequences are still not well-understood. In this study, live cell imaging was used to investigate the fate of micronuclei and micronucleated cells in HeLa cells treated with various genotoxic agents. The results showed that most micronuclei persist for multiple cell cycles or reincorporate, while micronucleated cells are more prone to cell death, senescence, and mitotic errors compared to non-micronucleated cells.

Summary: The current techniques used in food analysis do not consider genotoxic compounds. It is urgent to shift the paradigm in analytics towards non-target planar genotoxicity profiling to detect genotoxins. A study detected up to eight different genotoxins in 33 oils used for healthy diets, and identified genotoxic degradation products in oils stored open and closed for one month. High-resolution mass spectrometry revealed oxidized linolenic acid as the source of genotoxicity in all samples. Detoxification through on-surface S9 liver metabolization reduced most, but not all, genotoxins. By combining separation, effect detection, and simulated metabolization on the same surface, this profiling technique can identify sources of genotoxicity in food, feed, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. Its application will enhance understanding of food and its impact, as well as risk assessment and recommendations.

Summary: With the growing popularity of herbal tea in China, illegal drugs, such as aminopyrine, are being added by food fraudsters to enhance its effects. However, the current lack of immunoassays for aminopyrine makes real-time detection in the field difficult. In this study, a sensitive ic-ELISA method was developed using a polyclonal antibody for aminopyrine, which showed good consistency with LC-MS in detecting actual samples and can be considered as a reliable method for aminopyrine detection in herbal tea.
