Summary: Research found that the outcome of adolescent depression treatment is influenced by factors such as age, parent-child relationship, gender, comorbid anxiety disorder, and sleep difficulties. Early, community-based, and time-limited interventions may lead to symptom improvement and remission in adolescent depression.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term prognosis of epilepsy of unknown cause in children without major disability onset between ages 2 and 16. It found that the duration of initial antiseizure medication treatment was not associated with subsequent epilepsy risk, suggesting that the timing of withdrawal attempts does not alter the long-term prognosis. Additionally, the prognostic model developed in the initial study failed to predict long-term outcomes, raising questions about its relevance to long-term epilepsy risk.

Summary: Interpersonal violence is the main cause of death among adolescents. Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) aim to address the emotional and behavioral consequences of violence. This paper presents a case study of an adolescent receiving care from a pediatric HVIP, showcasing the use of evidence-based practices such as intensive case management, Psychological First Aid (PFA), and Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR). Through these treatment approaches, the patient was able to recover from trauma and experience posttraumatic growth. Recommendations for assessment and trauma-informed treatment in HVIPs are also provided to support evidence-based practices.

Summary: Discrimination and stigma associated with epilepsy in schools impact the academic and mental aptitude of children with epilepsy. Teachers pre-sensitized to seizures exhibit a positive attitude along with better knowledge about epilepsy. The aim was to assess the impact of an interactive one-day educational workshop regarding epilepsy on the prevalent knowledge, attitude, and practices toward epilepsy among school teachers.

Summary: In this study, the results of a randomized trial of family-focused therapy for high-risk youth with bipolar disorder (BD) were reported, and psychosocial and neuroimaging variables were examined as mediators of treatment effects. The findings indicate that family-focused therapy can delay mood episodes and reduce suicidal ideation in symptomatic youth with familial liability to BD. Neuroimaging data suggests neural adaptations related to improved emotion regulation in youth receiving family-focused therapy.

Summary: This study examines interventions for early adolescents and finds that interventions targeting emotion regulation have a significant positive effect on behavioral and emotional outcomes, while interventions focused on cognitive regulation, parent training, physical activity, and working memory do not show significant effects. Youth report of emotional distress is the most affected outcome measure.

Summary: An inpatient pancreatitis consultative service was introduced to provide guideline-based recommendations and education to acute pancreatitis inpatients. The study found that the implementation of this service resulted in improved outcomes for patients with mild acute pancreatitis, including reduced length of stay, shorter refeeding time, and lower infection rates. Guideline-based educational interventions had a beneficial impact on the management of mild acute pancreatitis by admitting teams even without pancreatitis consultation.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictive factors for seizure recurrence after epilepsy surgery in patients with lesional posterior cortex epilepsy (PCE). It was found that more than half of the patients were seizure-free at long-term follow-up, but bilateral findings on interictal EEG and gliosis were associated with recurrent seizures after surgery.

Summary: This study retrospectively investigated the functional outcomes after hemispherotomy in a cohort of 455 children, and identified the determinants of these outcomes. The results showed that the use of antiseizure medication and independent walking ability were good, but language ability and voluntary grasping with the hemiplegic hand were affected by certain factors.

Summary: There is a growing international interest in providing consensus advice for prescribers in the field of drug resistant epilepsy, especially when it comes to trying potential therapies like cannabinoids that are nonregistered or off-label. In order to address the gap in practice and provide guidance, a working group in Australia developed interim consensus advice for prescribers, focusing on the use of cannabis medicines in the treatment of epilepsy and providing information on dosing, toxicity, and drug interactions. This interim consensus advice is expected to be updated as new evidence emerges and eventually form the basis for a subsequent Guideline.
