Summary: This study aimed to investigate the number of older adults in an aged care nursing home who could not be tested for oral diadochokinesis (OD) and investigate their characteristics. The results showed that older adults who required a nursing care level of 4 or higher and had a dementia degree of III or higher were unable to perform the OD test. Additional assessment tools for oral function should be considered for this population.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of individual tongue function and the mechanical properties of gels on squeezing behavior. The results showed that maximal voluntary tongue pressure (MVTP) was positively correlated with average tongue pressure per squeezing cycle (ATPS) and negatively correlated with the number of squeezes. Additionally, MVTP and the fracture properties of gels were associated with ATPS and the number of squeezes.

Summary: Luminescent manometry allows remote pressure readout with high resolution. In this study, a new approach utilizing the luminescence kinetics of Mn4+ ions in SrGdAlO4 is presented for remote pressure sensing. The unique feature of this method is the pressure-induced prolongation of the lifetime of Mn4+ ions, resulting from changes in the Mn4+-O2- bond covalency. By taking advantage of this effect, a luminescent manometer with a maximum relative sensitivity of 7.85%/GPa and sensitivities above 5%/GPa in the pressure range of 1-7.6 GPa was developed. Furthermore, the measurement was temperature invariant in the range of 260-365 K, with a manometric factor of 134.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between tongue pressure data measured by the IOPI and the JMS tongue pressure measurement device in young healthy participants, showing significant correlations in the total cohort, and in male and female participants separately, indicating that the measurements obtained with the JMS device are comparable to those obtained with the IOPI.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance, accuracy, precision, and repeatability of two single-use airway pressure manometers as cost-effective alternatives for measuring the inflation pressure of high-volume, low-pressure cuff endotracheal tubes. The results showed that both alternative tools yielded results comparable to commercial cuff manometers, providing clinically sufficient accuracy, precision, and repeatability for cuff inflation between pressures of 20 and 30 cmH(2)O. Therefore, they serve as inexpensive alternatives to commercial manometers.

Summary: This paper compares the manometric performance of two ratiometric approaches in the material based on the luminescence of Cr3+ ions and finds that the second approach provides completely temperature-invariant pressure measurement with a sensitivity of 9.8% GPa(-1). The results indicate that the MgO:Cr3+ nanoparticles are a highly reliable and sensitive candidate for a new luminescent manometer.

Summary: This study investigated the association between swallowing function and oral function among community-dwelling elderly Japanese, suggesting that individuals suspected of having decline in swallowing function had lower oral function. The cut-off values for identifying decline in swallowing function were 71 years of age and ODK /pa/ sound < 6.2 times/second.

Summary: In this study, a super-sensitive and temperature-invariant near infrared (NIR) emitting luminescent manometer based on LiScGeO4:Cr3+ was developed. It exhibits a linear spectral shift with the highest rate reported to date, making it highly sensitive for pressure measurement. Its application in non-transparent systems and its elimination of spectral overlapping issues in high-pressure luminescence experiments make it of great importance.
