Summary: Stable isotope tracers are commonly used with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for enzyme activity and metabolic pathway studies. In this research, three commercially available instruments were used to analyze samples from a stable isotope labeling study on Rothia mucilaginosa metabolism. The study found that all three GC-MS instruments can be used for stable isotope tracing studies, with high-resolution GC-QTOF MS offering additional capabilities in identifying the chemical structures of unknown compounds.

Summary: In this study, a specific, reliable, and suitable method for a fast and simultaneous analysis of 335 pesticides in ginseng was developed using liquid chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The method was validated for linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision, with limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) ranging from 0.1-5.8 μg/kg and 0.3-17.5 μg/kg, respectively. Analysis of 467 ginseng samples from 2016 to 2019 revealed pesticide residues in 304 samples, but most were below the standard. The hazard quotient (HQ) of ginseng for detected pesticides was less than 1, indicating low risk.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic changes in multiple tissues induced by cold exposure in mice. The results showed that cold exposure effectively modulated adipose tissue metabolism and improved metabolic health. Amino acids, fatty acids, and energy metabolism were found to be the most significantly altered compounds, and these changes may provide new insights for treating metabolic diseases.

Summary: This study compared the efficiency of different methods for the analysis of nitrosamines and monitored nine nitrosamines eluted from rubber-type products. The EI-GC-MS/MS method performed the best in analyzing the nitrosamines, and the risk assessment showed that these nitrosamines were safe for oral exposure in terms of both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks.

Summary: This study achieved the development of an unobtrusive and effective technology that can track fish freshness in real time and determine its edibility using a single metal oxide gas sensor. The system does not require an external reference air source and can be integrated into domestic refrigerators. Experimental results showed a strong dependence of the microbiological condition and gas-phase composition on individual samples and storage temperature.

Summary: A rapid and accurate method for detecting volatile components of corn was established using GC-IMS and GC-MS. The fingerprints of corns under different treatments were analyzed, and key flavor compounds were identified. The corns were classified into four categories, consistent with the results of sensory evaluation. Steamed, boiled, and fried corns were found to be more popular.

Summary: Breath analysis is an attractive and non-invasive strategy for monitoring metabolic dynamics in living organisms. Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical platform for breath analysis, and ambient mass spectrometry has been widely adopted due to its minimal/sample pretreatment requirements. This tutorial review introduces the principles, setup, procedures, applications, and future prospects of mass spectrometry-based techniques for breath analysis, aiming to facilitate further development and application in this field.

Summary: In this study, a new tile-based supervised analysis method called tile-based RF analysis is introduced, which combines the four-grid tiling scheme for F-ratio analysis with Random Forest algorithm. The RF approach allows analysis of unbalanced data sets and provides more stringent feature selection. It is a promising method for identifying class-distinguishing analytes in complex biological matrices characterized by high between-class variance and high within-class variance.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the effects of pyrolysis temperature, time, particle source, size, and mass on the pyrolysis efficiency and product distribution of polystyrene (PS) micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs). The results showed that pyrolysis temperature and time significantly influenced the pyrolysis efficiency, while the mass of MNPs affected the distribution of pyrolysis products. The study proposed optimal pyrolysis conditions for PS determination using Py-GC/MS.
