Summary: The hairy root (HR) culture system is an excellent alternative strategy for mass production of valuable compounds. Selection of suitable Agrobacterium strain is essential for enhanced production of beneficial secondary metabolites. In this study, Agrobacterium strain R1601 was found to be one of the most promising strains for inducing mass HR production and enhanced levels of secondary metabolites in Ocimum basilicum.

Summary: Plants are important sources of secondary metabolites, but natural plant populations cannot meet the commercial demand due to low accumulation volume. Hairy root cultures induced by plant interaction with Rhizobium rhizogenes are a practical solution for producing valuable secondary metabolites at low cost and without seasonal variations. Metabolic engineering in hairy roots, including overexpression and silencing of genes and transcription factor overexpression, can enhance metabolite production. This review focuses on alkaloids and discusses future prospects for meeting production demands through metabolic engineering in hairy roots.

Summary: This study tested the efficiency of hairy root induction in Centella asiatica using leaf and petiole explants. The results showed that petiole-derived hairy roots had the highest growth index and triterpenoid concentration. The findings suggest that hairy root culture of C. asiatica can be scaled up for mass production of triterpenoids.

Summary: Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) is widely used for medicinal, food, and textile purposes. This study focused on the roots of hemp, which have received less attention than other parts. By using hairy root cultures and treating them with salicylic acid, the levels of triterpenoids friedelin and epifriedelanol in the roots were significantly increased. These findings suggest that hairy root cultures with optimized elicitation could be an alternative method to produce valuable triterpenoids.

Summary: A novel and effective direct shoot regeneration technique was developed for the medicinal plant Coleus forskohlii. Meta-Topolin was found to be more efficient than BAP in promoting direct organogenesis. The regeneration process showed distinct phases of shoot formation. The developed protocol can be used for the commercial production of C. forskohlii.
