Very little is known about JCV infection and genotype distribution with respect to the different demographic and clinical characteristics of the Italian population. A cross-sectional study was carried out on the prevalence of JCV genotypes in 323 Caucasian subjects (mean age: 37.5 years, range: 270 years). Urine samples from 200 immunocompromised patients, including patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), colon cancer, inflammatory diseases and Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), and 123 immunocompetent individuals were tested by quantitative real time PCR. Sequencing of the JCV viral protein 1 (VP1) and transcriptional control region (TCR) was performed. In this series, the overall prevalence of JCV excretion was 32.8% without significant differences between males and females. JCV was detected in 39.5% of patients and in 22% of healthy individuals (P=0.004). The most prevalent JCV genotype excreted was genotype 1 (69.8%), followed by genotype 2 (22.6%) and genotype 4 (7.5%). Distribution of genotypes between patients and healthy subjects showed a statistically significant difference for the type 1 compared to the other variants (P<0.01). Of note, JCV genotype 2 was found to be associated to young patients (P=0.0001) and to patients treated with immunomodulator drugs (P=0.0001), but not to PML subjects. The non-pathogenic archetype IIS (singular, insert) form was present in all JCV strains detected. This result allows to hypothesize a possible JCV genotype selection in response to pressure by immunomodulatory drugs. J. Med. Virol. 85:12861292, 2013. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Umbilical Venous Volume Flow in Late-Onset Fetal Growth Restriction

Odessa P. Hamidi, Camille Driver, Jon G. Steller, Emma E. Peek, Lorenzo Monasta, Tamara Stampalija, Diane L. Gumina, Greggory R. DeVore, John C. Hobbins, Henry L. Galan

Summary: This study compares the differences and abnormal rates of umbilical vein flow (UVF) between fetal growth restriction (FGR) fetuses meeting Delphi criteria (FGR-D), small-for-gestational age (SGA) fetuses, and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) controls. The results show that absolute UVF is decreased in FGR-D, and the incidence of abnormal UVF is higher in late-onset FGR fetuses. UVF may provide additional diagnostic value for fetuses affected by growth restriction.

Burden of disease among older adults in Europe-trends in mortality and disability, 1990-2019

Summary: This study examines the development of disease burden among older adults in Europe over the last 30 years. The results indicate an overall increase in disease burden among older Europeans, especially in Western Europe. Eastern Europe experienced a decrease in DALYs between 2006 and 2013. There are significant differences in DALY rates among regions and genders, with cardiovascular diseases being the major contributor to changes in YLL rates.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the gaps in global health surveillance, disease prevention, and treatment due to issues in financing national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aims to assess global health spending at the start of the pandemic, determine the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response, and analyze the expectations for future health spending and investment in pandemic preparedness.

Umbilical Vein Blood Flow in Uncomplicated Pregnancies: Systematic Review of Available Reference Charts and Comparison with a New Cohort

Moira Barbieri, Giulia Zamagni, Ilaria Fantasia, Lorenzo Monasta, Leila Lo Bello, Mariachiara Quadrifoglio, Giuseppe Ricci, Gianpaolo Maso, Monica Piccoli, Daniela Denis Di Martino, Enrico Mario Ferrazzi, Tamara Stampalija

Summary: The objectives of this study were to review the available umbilical vein blood flow volume (UV-Q) reference ranges in uncomplicated pregnancies and compare them with UV-Q values obtained from a local cohort. Literature in English was reviewed according to PRISMA guidelines. Original articles were grouped based on UV sampling sites and formulae used to compute UV-Q. The UV-Q values were derived from formulae or tables presented by authors. A prospective observational study of uncomplicated singleton pregnancies was conducted to compare UV-Q with the systematic review results. Overall, there was a substantial heterogeneity in reported UV-Q central values, but values overlapped when using the same sampling methodology and formulae. The study suggests that UV-Q assessment is accurate and reproducible when adhering to the same methodology, encouraging further investigation on clinical applications.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Valeria Capaci, Giorgio Arrigoni, Lorenzo Monasta, Michelangelo Aloisio, Giulia Rocca, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Danilo Licastro, Federico Romano, Giuseppe Ricci, Blendi Ura

Summary: This study focuses on the phosphoproteome of endometrial cancer (EC) and normal endometrium, aiming to identify differentially phosphorylated proteins involved in tumorigenic signaling pathways. Differentially phosphorylated proteins were analyzed using 2D-DIGE, IMAC, and mass spectrometry. Validation through Western blotting confirmed altered abundance of HBB, CKB, LDHB, and HSPB1. Bioinformatic analysis revealed tumorigenic signaling pathways. This study highlights the role of phosphoproteome in EC tumor growth and suggests potential for new drugs targeting EC.

Summary: We investigated the temporal variations in disease burden of PM2.5 and ozone in Italy using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The study found that while the burden of PM2.5 significantly decreased in Italy, the burden of ozone increased, even in the context of population aging.

A Multi-Omics Approach Revealed Common Dysregulated Pathways in Type One and Type Two Endometrial Cancers

Valeria Capaci, Lorenzo Monasta, Michelangelo Aloisio, Eduardo Sommella, Emanuela Salviati, Pietro Campiglia, Manuela Giovanna Basilicata, Feras Kharrat, Danilo Licastro, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Federico Romano, Giuseppe Ricci, Blendi Ura

Summary: This study utilized a multi-omics approach to investigate common dysregulated pathways in type 1 and type 2 endometrial cancer (EC) using four EC cell lines. The analysis identified shared pathways and identified specific proteins and metabolites involved in EC tumor growth. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying EC development and growth.

Summary: This study provides the most up-to-date global, regional, and national data on the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) for low back pain. It reveals that low back pain is the leading cause of YLDs globally and projects that there will be over 800 million cases of low back pain worldwide by 2050. Challenges persist in obtaining primary country-level data on low back pain, highlighting the need for more high-quality data to improve accuracy and monitoring of the condition.
