Summary: This study evaluated the clinical utility and survival outcomes of the C-reactive protein to albumin ratio, albumin-bilirubin index, and platelet-albumin-bilirubin index in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The results showed that a C-reactive protein-albumin ratio greater than 0.034 was associated with poor prognosis following liver resection.

Summary: Adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal junction is a major cause of cancer death in the Western World, with increasing incidence. The overall survival of patients on a potentially curative treatment pathway has significantly improved by adding perioperative oncological therapies to surgery. However, patients often have poor response to oncological treatment or struggle to complete their treatment after surgery.

Summary: This study found that pretreatment systemic inflammation markers, such as CRP levels, are associated with survival outcomes in endometrial cancer patients. CRP may serve as a simple, low-cost predictive biomarker to guide personalized care in endometrial cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm the utility of CRP in other populations as most participants in this study were of White British ethnicity.

Summary: Post-operative inflammation in cancer patients can be modulated by drugs and diets, but evidence on its prognostic role remains limited. This study systematically reviewed and meta-analysed the prognostic value of post-operative C-reactive protein (CRP)-based inflammatory biomarkers among patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The results showed that post-operative CRP and Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) or modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) were associated with overall survival (OS), CRC-specific survival (CSS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Post-operative CRP-based inflammatory biomarkers have a significant prognostic role for patients with CRC.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies are common in pre-BS patients with severe obesity, especially in the presence of inflammation. Increased CRP levels are significantly associated with deficiencies in vitamin B12, folate, and the presence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the levels of inflammatory markers and endothelial function in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients after Q-SRP and FM-SRP treatments. The results showed that FM-SRP led to a significant increase in CRP and a decrease in FMD at Day 1 compared to Q-SRP. The improvement in HbA1c levels at Day 90 was significantly better in the Q-SRP group. Therefore, FM-SRP may have adverse effects on endothelial function and HbA1c levels in diabetes patients.

Summary: This study compared the performance of WHO-recommended tuberculosis screening tools with two newly developed clinical prediction models (CPMs) among outpatient people living with HIV. The results showed that C-reactive protein (CRP) performed the best as a screening tool, and the choice between using CRP or a CPM depends on available resources.

Summary: Systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) can be a potential prognostic marker for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The C-reactive protein (CRP)-lymphocyte ratio (CLR) was found to be associated with overall survival (OS) in CRC patients. High CLR was linked to shorter OS, with age, tumor differentiation, TNM stage, CEA levels, and CLR identified as significant independent factors affecting prognosis.

Summary: The study examines a score based on baseline CRP and fibrinogen values in GBM patients and finds that a high FC score is associated with shortened overall survival. This score could serve as an independent predictor of OS in GBM, highlighting the importance of further investigating the role of inflammation in prognosis prediction.

Summary: The study found that implementing a discharge checklist, including the use of CRP, did not decrease hospital readmission rates after colorectal surgery. Factors like age, sex, surgical acuity, and operating time were identified as significant risk factors for readmission, while CRP levels at discharge were not associated with readmissions.

Summary: The Glasgow Microenvironment Score (GMS) is validated as a prognostic tool for patients with stage I-III colorectal cancer, independent of TNM staging, and has the ability to stratify both low- and high-risk disease. Additionally, GMS 0 can be used to identify patients who benefit from FOLFOX over CAPOX chemotherapy.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the pre-operative systemic inflammatory response (SIR) in patients undergoing curative surgery for colon cancer is best evaluated using a Systemic Inflammatory Grade (SIG) combining modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Both mGPS and NLR have a significant impact on survival rates in colon cancer patients, and their combined use can better predict outcomes.
