From nanoplastic to microplastic: A bibliometric analysis on the presence of plastic particles in the environment

Rachel M. Sorensen, Boris Jovanovic

Summary: Identifying the leading publications, authors, and countries in microplastic and nanoplastic research is crucial for regulatory decisions, standardized research methodology, and solidifying definitions. Analyzing publication trends revealed that the USA and China are top publishing countries, but top publishing institutions are located outside of these countries.

Molecular Epidemiology of Novirhabdoviruses Emerging in Iranian Trout Farms

Sohrab Ahmadivand, Dusan Palic, Manfred Weidmann

Summary: Novirhabdoviruses, specifically VHSV and IHNV, were found to cause large epizootics and economic losses in farmed trout in Iran. The study confirmed the presence of 9 VHSV and 4 IHNV isolates in various regions of Iran, with genetic analysis indicating their origin from Europe possibly through imported eggs.

Summary: In a relatively pristine shallow pond, exposure to microplastics did not significantly impact colonization, species diversity, or abundance and biomass of functional feeding groups in the benthic community.

Revealing the effects of cerium dioxide nanoparticles through the analysis of morphological changes in Chironomus riparius

Summary: This study aims to investigate the sublethal effects of CeO2 NPs on the morphological features of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius. It was found that exposure to CeO2 NPs at different concentrations can lead to changes in morphological structures and potentially affect sexual dimorphism. Geometric morphometrics proved to be a valuable tool for assessing these fine morphological changes and has great applicative potential in ecotoxicological testing of nanoparticles.

Effect of freshwater fish oil feed supplementation on the reproductive condition and production parameters of hybrid catfish (Pangasius larnaudii x Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Sauvage, 1878) broodstock

Supaporn Sattang, Doungporn Amornlerdpison, Sudaporn Tongsiri, Dusan Palic, Kriangsak Mengumphan

Summary: The study indicates that adding freshwater fish oil to hybrid catfish feed in aquaculture can enhance growth and reproductive indicators of broodstock, as well as increase the levels of reproductive status biomarkers.

Effect of dietary modified zeolite (clinoptilolite) on growth performance of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) in the recirculating aquaculture system

Dogukan Kaya, Ercument Genc, Dusan Palic, Munevver Ayce Genc, Nemanja Todorovic, Huseyin Sevgili, Marko Vasiljevic, Mahir Kanyilmaz, Derya Guroy

Summary: Adding 2 g kg(-1) of surface-modified clinoptilolite to the feed can enhance the growth parameters of fingerling gilthead sea bream in a recirculating aquaculture system. It also improves weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio. However, there were no significant differences in body indices, blood parameters, or whole-body protein and fat levels among the different dietary levels of zeolite supplementation.

Association of wastewater determinants with fish hematological and plasma biochemical responses: Multivariate analysis approach

Natalija Topic Popovic, Jasenka Gajdos Kljusuric, Ivancica Strunjak-Perovic, Josip Barisic, Dusan Palic, Blanka Beer Ljubic, Sanja Babic, Rozelindra Coz-Rakovac

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the value and applicability of multivariate tools for assessing hematological and plasma biochemical responses of fish living in treated wastewater. Various data analysis methods and modeling techniques were applied to identify clustering based on parameters, significant variables, and correlations between observed variables and samples collected at different places and seasons. The prediction models showed better performance in fall variables for predicting various blood parameters from fish and demonstrated high applicability for multiple purposes.

Effects of a microplastic mixture differ across trophic levels and taxa in a freshwater food web: In situ mesocosm experiment

Dilvin Yilcin, Gulce Yalcin, Boris Jovanovic, David S. Boukal, Lucie Vebrova, Derya Riha, Jelena Stankovic, Dimitrija Savic Zdrakovic, Melisa Metin, Yasmin Naz Akyurek, Deniz Balkanl, Nur Filiz, Djuradj Milosevic, Heidrun Feuchtmayr, Jessica A. Richardson, Meryem Beklioglu

Summary: The impacts of microplastics (MP) on freshwater lake ecosystems and food webs were examined. Results showed that the ingestion of MP by zooplankton was mainly limited to large-bodied Daphnia, leading to a decrease in biomass. Atrophic transfer of MP was observed through the presence of MP in the faecal pellets of odonate larvae. Despite the low impact on biomass transfer and emergence patterns, the experiment provided the first in situ observation of MP transfer to terrestrial ecosystems by emerging chironomids.

Past, present, and possible future policies on plastic use in the United States, particularly microplastics and nanoplastics: A review

Rachel M. Sorensen, Rameshwar S. Kanwar, Boris Jovanovi

Summary: As global plastic usage increases, it is crucial to regulate both microplastics and nanoplastics. The United States Congress and federal agencies have passed laws and regulations that can address plastic pollution, but microplastic and nanoplastic waste in water or air are currently not regulated. States have implemented plastic regulations, with California focusing on monitoring microplastics in drinking water. TSCA should be used to test the safety of plastics, and other statutes should include microplastics in their definitions. The FDA should redefine microplastics as contaminants and set tolerances for their presence in food and beverages. Minor changes in the classification of microplastics can help minimize their potential effects on human health and the environment.

Toxic effects of a cyanobacterial strain on Chironomus riparius larvae in a multistress environment

Nikola Stankovic, Boris Jovanovic, Ivana Kostic Kokic, Milica Stojkovic Piperac, Jelica Simeunovic, Dimitar Jakimov, Ivica Dimkic, Djuradj Milosevic

Summary: Cyanobacteria and their toxic metabolites, including microcystin-LR, have been found to have detrimental effects on aquatic organisms, especially in the presence of environmental stressors. This study investigated the effects of microcystin-LR and Trichormus variabilis on Chironomus riparius larvae in a multistress environment and found that microcystin-LR had an additive effect with environmental stressors, leading to increased larval mortality. Chronic exposure to microcystin-LR also resulted in reduced larval mass, hemoglobin concentration, and DNA damage in somatic cells. These findings highlight the importance of studying the interactions between stressors and cyanotoxins in aquatic ecosystems.
