Emergence and Characterization of a Novel Reassortant Canine Influenza Virus Isolated from Cats

Jin Zhao, Wanting He, Meng Lu, Haijian He, Alexander Lai

Summary: Cats are susceptible to various influenza A viruses, including a novel reassortant virus (FIV-HWT-2017) isolated from a symptomatic cat in China. This reassortant virus has genetic characteristics from avian, canine, and human influenza viruses. Enhanced surveillance for novel influenza viruses in pet and stray cats is necessary.

Divergent Viruses Discovered in Swine Alter the Understanding of Evolutionary History and Genetic Diversity of the Respirovirus Genus and Related Porcine Parainfluenza Viruses

Summary: Paramyxoviridae is a rapidly growing family of viruses, and it is difficult to predict the harm of newly emerging viruses to humans and animals. By analyzing the genomes of porcine parainfluenza virus (PPIV), a new species named PPIV-2 was discovered, and a revision of the species classification criteria for the Respirovirus genus was proposed. Recombination events and high genetic diversity were found in PPIV-1, indicating the importance of recombination in the diversity of the Respirovirus genus.
