Summary: In patients with Prader-Willi syndrome and obesity, plasma kisspeptin levels were higher compared to healthy subjects before treatment. After 12-month GH therapy, lean body mass increased, total fat mass decreased, and plasma kisspeptin levels decreased to normal levels, indicating improvements in body composition.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in the outcomes of growth hormone replacement therapy (GHRT) between growth hormone deficient (GHD) men and women. The results showed that women were more likely to have subnormal insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels during treatment and experienced more adverse events, requiring dose reduction or temporary stoppage of GHRT. Men had a higher risk of developing malignant neoplasms. This suggests that women with GHD may not be receiving optimal treatment and have lower tolerability of GHRT, but it does not imply discontinuation of treatment.

Summary: Low muscle mass combined with changes in physical function and muscle quality is defined as sarcopenia. In people > 60 years, sarcopenia reaches 10% and tends to increase with age. Recent evidence suggests that protein alone has been ineffective in increasing muscle strength in preventing sarcopenia. However, the Mediterranean dietary pattern with a high anti-inflammatory potential has been considered as a emerging dietary remedy against sarcopenia. This systematic review summarized the evidence of the role of Mediterranean diet in sarcopenia prevention and/or improvement in healthy elders, and found that Mediterranean diet adherence had a positive role in muscle mass and muscle function, while the effect on muscle strength and sarcopenia prevention was less clear. Further clinical trials are needed to determine the importance of the Mediterranean diet in sarcopenia prevention and management.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate age-related differences in muscle morphology, function, and functional capability in healthy adults. The results showed negative correlations between age and muscle thickness, pennation angle, fascicle length, maximal displacement, grip strength, and the 1-min chair rise test, while positive correlations were observed between age and the echo intensity of the muscle and total contraction time. The differences in muscle health were noticeable at 50 years of age, and females had larger differences compared to males. Physical activity was suggested to mitigate the detrimental changes.

Summary: Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder characterized by specific physical and cognitive symptoms. A study on long-term growth hormone (GH) treatment in adult patients with PWS found that it did not adversely affect body composition and metabolism, indicating its safety in this population.

Summary: The study suggests that increasing the intake of antioxidant-rich foods can help improve sarcopenia outcomes. Through meta-analysis, it was found that consuming more fruits/vegetables, supplementing with magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin D, and protein can significantly reduce the time required for 5 stands, while tea catechin supplementation can increase grip strength.

Summary: This study found that higher grip strength was associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, while older age and obesity were associated with higher risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. The results suggest that muscle strength is an independent risk factor for COVID-19 severity in adults aged 50 years or older.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to map out definitions and assessment methods of muscle quality in older adults. A total of 96 articles were included, revealing a substantial heterogeneity of definitions and assessment methods across functional and morphological domains. Standardizing the definition of muscle quality may help utilize it as a potential marker of skeletal muscle health in older adults.

Summary: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a clinical syndrome that can present in both children and adults, with potential impact on quality of life and metabolic health. Diagnosing GHD requires a comprehensive medical history, physical examination, and targeted biochemical testing and imaging. GH stimulation tests are commonly used, but interpretation of results can be challenging due to various factors.
