Modern food production is very diverse with high levels of specialisation and complexity. These features inevitably reflect on methods in the application of LCA to food products and agro-systems. System boundaries, functional units, allocation procedures and several other aspects contribute to there being substantial differentiation in the structure of LCA applications in fruit production systems, leading to significantly different results. Indeed, although scientific literature on the topic is recent and not particularly extensive, there are already many different ways of conducting LCAs in orchards. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework for selecting the best parameters for an LCA application in fruit production systems according to the objective of the study. This has been achieved by reviewing the scientific and technical literature on the topic. In particular papers from international journals and conference proceedings have been considered and the review has covered all main aspects for conducting an LCA in fruit production systems. The particular characteristics considered were objectives, system boundaries, the product considered, the functional unit, data origin and the environmental impact assessment method used. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the modelling of the orchard, as this is key to a reliable application of any impact assessment approach. Rather than merely describing the theoretical model, this paper presents concrete recommendations about how to build the orchard system for LCA application avoiding over or under-estimations of the different orchard stages. Scenario analysis using the Daisy model to assess and mitigate nitrate leaching from complex agro-environmental settings in Denmark

Muhammad Adil Rashid, Sander Bruun, Merete Elisabeth Styczen, Jens Erik Orum, Signe Kynding Borgen, Ingrid Kaag Thomsen, Lars Stoumann Jensen

Summary: This study analyzed nitrogen (N) leaching from Danish cropping systems and evaluated on-farm measures to reduce N leaching. The results showed that spring crop rotations were more prone to leaching, while higher soil clay content reduced N leaching. Undersown and autumn sown catch crops were effective in reducing leaching.

Finiavana Mihary Valisoa Rakotonirina, Dario Donno, Zoarilala Rinah Razafindrakoto, Nantenaina Tombozara, Roger Marie Rafanomezantsoa, Charles Andrianjara, David Ramanitrahasimbola, Gabriele Loris Beccaro

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the main antioxidants in Uapaca bojeri fruits and evaluate their contribution to the anti-inflammatory and antihyperglycemic effects. Qualitative and quantitative analyses confirmed the presence of multiple phytochemicals in the fruits and demonstrated their activities in antioxidant capacity, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antihyperglycemic properties. Isolation of bioactive compounds is needed to confirm these pharmacological properties and explore potential applications in health-promoting food products or medicinal treatments.

length Black soldier fly larvae as an alternative feed source and agro-waste disposal route-A life cycle perspective

M. Beyers, C. Coudron, R. Ravi, E. Meers, S. Bruun

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to evaluate the environmental impacts of black soldier fly production using different diets. The results showed that non-residue insect feed and energy use contributed significantly to the overall environmental impacts. Insect protein had greater impacts than protein from soybean meal or fishmeal due to high energy consumption and agro-product demands. These findings indicate areas that need to be addressed to enhance the sustainability of European insect production.

Priming is frequently overestimated in studies using 14C-labelled substrates due to underestimation of 14CO2 activity

Elinor F. Boos, Sander Bruun, Jakob Magid

Summary: This study reveals that the liquid scintillation counting method may lead to underestimation of 14C activity and overestimation of soil priming effect. It is found that 33-43% of the studies reviewed used scintillation counting parameters that could underestimate 14C activity. Thus, the accuracy of liquid scintillation counting in measuring soil priming effect should be taken into consideration.

Constructed wetlands and duckweed ponds as a treatment step in liquid manure handling-A life cycle assessment

Miriam Beyers, Rahul Ravi, Reindert Devlamynck, Erik Meers, Lars Stoumann Jensen, Sander Bruun

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of duckweed ponds and constructed wetlands in treating pig manure liquid fraction. The study found that these systems are viable options for tertiary treatment and can help address nutrient imbalances in areas with intensive livestock farming. The use of duckweed and wetland plants can reduce over-fertilization and prevent nitrogen losses to aquatic environments. Additionally, duckweed can serve as a substitute for livestock feed and reduce the need for protein imports.

Quali-Quantitative Study on Phenol Compounds as Early Predictive Markers of Graft Incompatibility: A Case Study on Chestnut (Castanea spp.)

Giovanni Gamba, Viviana Cisse, Dario Donno, Zoarilala Rinah Razafindrakoto, Gabriele Loris Beccaro

Summary: This study investigated the content of phenolic compounds in different combinations of chestnut cultivars and rootstocks. Higher amounts of gallic acid and catechin were found at the graft union of incompatible combinations. Differences in tannin concentrations seemed to be species-specific and not related to graft incompatibility. These findings highlight the potential application of phenolic compounds in early prediction of graft incompatibility in chestnut.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Zhe Chen, Xiaojing Li, Xianli Xia, Jizhou Zhang

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
