In this study, we proposed eco-efficiency indicator as an integral parameter for simultaneously quantifying the economic and environmental performance of industrial symbiosis (IS) networks. Based on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development definition of eco-efficiency, the eco-efficiency indicators proposed include one economic indicator, and three generally applicable simplified environmental indicators (raw material consumption, energy consumption, and CO2 emission). Three eco-efficiencies corresponding to three environmental indicators are assessed using seven IS networks that were developed between 2007 and 2012, which are currently operational in Ulsan Eco-Industrial Park (EIP), South Korea. Our results indicate that the eco-efficiency of individual IS networks improved up to 28.7%. Besides, the evolution of seven IS networks comprising 21 companies resulted in an overall eco-efficiency enhancement of about 10%. The proposed eco-efficiency indicators for IS networks can be easily utilized to communicate with decision makers at any level to assist in transforming conventional industrial complexes to EIP. The implications of the study and limitations of the methodology are delineated. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Characterization and optimization of calorific value of low grade coal by statistical experiment and modelling

Sangchul Park, Qammer Zaib, Hung-Suck Park

Summary: The study revealed that humidity has the greatest impact on the total calorific value of low grade coal, followed by temperature. By optimizing environmental conditions, the GCV of the coal can approach 6,000 kcal/kg, which helps resolve disputes between buyers and sellers regarding the variability in GCV.

Summary: This study introduces a modified physical quantity method (MPQM) to address methodological issues in emergy assessment in co-production systems, showing that MPQM provides more accurate results compared to other emergy accounting methods. However, inefficiency was found in Eucalyptus pulp production using the MPQM approach. These findings are expected to enhance the methodological aspects of emergy accounting based on the physical quantity criterion.

Characteristics of industrial hazardous waste generation in South Korea from 2008 to 2018 based on decoupling and decomposition analysis

Daye Lee, Junbeum Kim, Hung-Suck Park

Summary: This study analysed the generation characteristics of industrial hazardous waste in South Korea from 2008 to 2018 and found that factors such as industrial output and characteristics of hazardous waste generation-to-energy are major driving factors influencing the increase of industrial hazardous waste generation. Meanwhile, industrial structure and energy efficiency affect the decrease of industrial hazardous waste generation in most industries. It was also confirmed that different industries have varying driving factors affecting industrial hazardous waste generation. These results provide insights for the South Korean government to improve and customize hazardous waste management policies.

Regional sustainability assessment using emergy accounting approach: The case of Nepal in South Asia

Keshab Shrestha, Izhar Hussain Shah, Zhe Liu, Hung -Suck Park

Summary: This study used emergy accounting to analyze the environmental performance and energy pathways of Nepal, and found that Nepal's environmental load and emergy sustainability scores have decreased in recent years. Future projections indicate that Nepal's total energy and non-renewable energy will continue to increase, and the emergy sustainability index may further decline. To improve environmental management, Nepal can take various measures, such as reducing the material trade deficit by increasing domestic material extraction and reducing imports of non-renewable resources, minimizing the use of non-renewable resources, improving soil fertility, and promoting the consumption of renewable resources.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
