Summary: Research shows that the relationship between Lean and performance improvement is not always positive. One potential reason for this is supply chain complexity. This study examines the impact of supply chain complexity on Lean's effect on performance, finding that it acts as a mediator in this relationship. While most mediating effects are negative, there are some positive effects, emphasizing the difference between dysfunctional and strategic supply chain complexity. The results suggest that managers should reduce internal and upstream complexity to enhance Lean's influence on performance, particularly by reducing the number of inputs a plant must manage.
