Eco-design is a valuable approach in order to reduce the environmental impact associated with a product system, by introducing environmental considerations early on in its design. Different strategies are possible for the implementation of eco-design, depending on the intended goals as well as the characteristics of the products. The present work proposes a series of eco-design indicators and tests to what extent the application of these simple indicators provides a reliable indication of the reduction of environmental impact, as measured by commonly employed Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicators. The product chosen for the case study was a water source heat pump. Two of the newly-developed indicators were applied and compared to LCIA indicators, focussing on design for disassembly and for recycling. A good and robust correlation was found, providing support to the thesis that these simple eco-design indicators can be used as a proxy to quickly and effectively gauge the environmental improvements introduced in a product system at the design stage. Life cycle assessment of an ecological living module equipped with conventional rooftop or integrated concentrating photovoltaics

Marco Raugei, Naomi Keena, Nick Novelli, Mohamed Aly Etman, Anna Dyson

Summary: Research suggests that solar systems outperform grid mix systems in reducing a building's dependence on nonrenewable resources over their entire lifecycle, especially in locations with a predominantly nonrenewable energy profile. Additionally, findings show that environmental impacts of solar cells are negligible in advanced systems, while the structural components are less environmentally friendly than conventional solar PV systems.

Update on the Life-Cycle GHG Emissions of Passenger Vehicles: Literature Review and Harmonization

Marco Raugei

Summary: Passenger vehicles are responsible for significant GHG emissions. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) offer the most promising option for decarbonizing the passenger vehicle fleet, with up to -70% reductions in GHG emissions compared to conventional ICEVs. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs and PHEVs) can bridge the gap between ICEVs and BEVs, especially in markets that are harder to electrify quickly. Fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) may be a viable option if hydrogen fuel is produced using renewable energy.

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.
