Summary: A rapid and highly sensitive method was developed for the separation and identification of related impurities and degradation products in tetracaine hydrochloride using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The study revealed that tetracaine hydrochloride is highly sensitive to oxidation and alkaline/acidic hydrolysis, as well as susceptible to light conditions. Five related impurities and seven degradation products were successfully detected, and their structures were characterized and discussed. The fragmentation pathways and plausible mechanisms for the formation of these impurities were proposed.

Summary: This article introduces a strategy for accurate quantification of triacylglycerols (TAGs) in edible oils, which can be used for identifying adulteration in olive oil. The results showed that this strategy significantly improves the accuracy of TAG content determination, reduces the relative error of fatty acids (FAs) content determination, and has a wider accurate quantitative range than gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. Importantly, this strategy combined with principal component analysis can be used to identify adulteration of high-priced olive oil with cheaper soybean oils, rapeseed oils, or camellia oils at a concentration as low as 2%. These findings suggest that the proposed strategy could be considered as a potential method for analyzing the quality and authenticity of edible oils.

Summary: Free chlorine (HOCl) and monochloramine (NH2Cl) are cost-effective oxidants for water reuse and provide protection against residual contaminants. In UV advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs), UV/H2O2 and UV/HOCl were found to remove a greater fraction of organic compounds, form fewer transformation products, and reduce non-target features to the greatest extent compared to UV/NH2Cl and UV/ambient. Additionally, UV/H2O2 resulted in fewer chlorinated byproducts and a slight increase in the oxidative stress response in bioassays.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.

Summary: A chitosan-alginate sponge with multiple cross-linking networks was developed for adsorption and enrichment of anionic dyes from food samples. The sponge showed better three-dimensional network structure, mechanical behavior, and stability compared to pure chitosan and alginate sponges. The adsorption performance and selectivity of the sponge were systematically studied, and it maintained high adsorption capacity and selectivity for anionic dyes. The sponge also showed satisfactory reusability and was successfully combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for the enrichment and detection of anionic dyes in candy and cocktail samples.
