The present work describes the validation of an easy, fast and efficient precolumn derivatization method for the quantification of oligosides, mannose and galactose obtained by degradation of galactomannans, This work combines an acid hydrolysis and an enzymatic degradation of natural galactomannans with the quantification of released residues by reversed-phase HPLC-UV, the most usual HPLC system in laboratories. In case of enzymatic degradation, mannotetraose has been detected and quantified for the first time, and an application to the evaluation of the galactosyl distribution in galactomannans is proposed. After an acidic hydrolysis, this method also allowed to obtain the mannose/galactose (M/G) ratio. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Influence of the Compression Molding Temperature on VOCs and Odors Produced from Natural Fiber Composite Materials

Benjamin Barthod-Malat, Maxime Hauguel, Karim Behlouli, Michel Grisel, Geraldine Savary

Summary: In the automotive sector, nonwoven preforms made from natural and thermoplastic fibers are widely used to manufacture vehicle interior parts. However, these natural fiber composites (NFCs) release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors, which hinder their widespread use. This study examines the effect of compression molding temperature on the release of VOCs and odors in flax/PP nonwoven composites. Real-time monitoring of core temperature and chemical analysis using HS-SPME and GC-MS were conducted to understand the changes in VOCs composition and odor intensity. The results allow for optimization of molding temperature to minimize odorous NFC materials.

Promising potential of bio-sourced amphiphilic xanthan as an emulsifier in O/W dispersions

Mira Abou Dib, Marie Lemarchand, Ecaterina Gore, Michel Grisel

Summary: The emulsification properties of hydrophobically modified xanthan (HMX) obtained through green esterification using alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA) as grafting agents were investigated. The study found that the new-brand bio-sourced HMX showed better emulsifying potential compared to pristine xanthan. The stability of the emulsions was studied at different levels and it was found that increasing grafting density or hydrophobic chain length improved the stability of the emulsions.

Intrinsic and rheological properties of hydrophobically modified xanthan synthesized under green conditions

Mira Abou Dib, Ecaterina Gore, Michel Grisel

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the properties and stability of hydrophobically modified xanthan (HMX) obtained via green esterification. Results show that grafting alkenyl moieties stabilize the thermal properties of xanthan and decrease its intrinsic viscosity. The rheological properties of HMX are enhanced, with an increase in viscosity and relaxation time, and an improvement in viscoelastic properties. Additionally, HMX slightly destabilizes the ordered conformation of xanthan in aqueous media.

Antioxidant Activity of Plant-Derived Colorants for Potential Cosmetic Application

Patrycja Brudzynska, Marzanna Kurzawa, Alina Sionkowska, Michel Grisel

Summary: The application of plant-derived colorants in cosmetics or food not only provides desired color but also has antioxidant properties that benefit the skin. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of purple and red plant-derived colorants using two methods: CUPRAC and DPPH free-radical scavenging activity. The results showed that UVC treatment had minimal influence on the antioxidant activity of the colorants.

Multivariate surface self-assembly strategy to fabricate ionic covalent organic framework surface grafting monolithic sorbent for enrichment of aristolochic acids prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis

Jian Sun, Zheheng Zheng, Zixiao Jia, Jiabin Wang, Xucong Lin

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
