The effect of functional mitral regurgitation has been investigated in an anatomically sized, fluid-structure interaction mitral valve model, where simulated correction has been performed by applying: (1) edge-to-edge repair with annuloplasty and (2) edge-to-edge repair only. Initially defined in an open unstressed/corrected configuration, fluid-structure interaction simulations of diastole have been performed in a rigid ventricular volume. Comparison of the maximum principal stresses (during diastole) in the normal and repaired models has shown that the magnitude of stress in the repaired scenarios is similar to 200% greater. The combined edge-to-edge and annuloplasty procedure was found to spread the induced stresses across the free margin of the leaflets, whereas without annuloplasty a localised stress concentration in the region of the suture was observed. Fluid flow downstream of the corrected configurations was able to achieve the same magnitude as in the normal case, although the flow rate was impaired. The maximum flow rate was found to be reduced by 44-50% with the peak flow rate shifted from the end of the diastole in the normal case to the start in the repaired cases. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Bcar1/p130Cas is essential for ventricular development and neural crest cell remodelling of the cardiac outflow tract

Marwa Mahmoud, Ian Evans, Laura Wisniewski, Yuen Tam, Claire Walsh, Simon Walker-Samuel, Paul Frankel, Peter Scambler, Ian Zachary

Summary: Research indicates a specific requirement for Bcar1 in neural crest cells, early myogenic and cardiac cells, essential for outflow tract septation, myocardialization, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation/cell cycle regulation, and differentiation into myogenic lineages. On the other hand, conditional knockouts of Bcar1 in differentiated smooth muscle, endothelial cells, and second heart field cells survived to term and were phenotypically normal at birth and postnatally.

Setd5 is required in cardiopharyngeal mesoderm for heart development and its haploinsufficiency is associated with outflow tract defects in mouse

Michelle Yu-Qing Cheung, Catherine Roberts, Peter Scambler, Athanasia Stathopoulou

Summary: Congenital heart defects are often associated with genetic haploinsufficiency syndromes and involve network interactions at the gene or protein level. This study identified Setd5 as a potentially haploinsufficient gene associated with cardiovascular defects, particularly in the development of the heart tube. Conditional mutagenesis revealed the requirement of Setd5 in cardiopharyngeal mesoderm for the formation of a four-chambered heart.

Fluid-structure interaction approach with smoothed particle hydrodynamics and particle-spring systems

Alessandra Monteleone, Guido Borino, Enrico Napoli, Gaetano Burriesci

Summary: This paper presents a novel three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, where the meshless smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used to simulate the motion of incompressible fluid flows, whilst structures are represented by a simplified approach based on particle-spring systems. The proposed FSI technique allows for independent spatial-temporal resolutions for the fluid and structural computational domains, and interfaces made of triangular elements are used to separate the two domains.

Standard mechanical testing is inadequate for the mechanical characterisation of shape-memory alloys: Source of errors and a new corrective approach

Sofia Di Leonardo, Giuseppe Pitarresi, Gaetano Burriesci

Summary: Thanks to its unique superelastic response, Nitinol has become the preferred material in many critical applications, especially in the medical implant field. However, the reversible phase transformation that gives rise to its exceptional behavior also makes its mechanical characterization complex, hindering the assumptions underlying common uniaxial tensile testing. This study analyzes the spurious effects introduced by the unconventional material behavior during uniaxial tensile testing using digital image correlation (DIC), and proposes a more accurate and systematic testing approach.

Modelling of thrombus formation using smoothed particle hydrodynamics method

Alessandra Monteleone, Alessia Viola, Enrico Napoli, Gaetano Burriesci

Summary: In this paper, a novel model based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is proposed to simulate thrombus formation. The model describes the main phases of the coagulative cascade by balancing biochemical species and platelets. SPH particles can transition from fluid to solid phase based on specific biochemical and physical conditions. The interaction between blood and the forming blood clot is handled using an innovative monolithic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach.

Individuals with rotator cuff tears unsuccessfully treated with exercise therapy have less inferiorly oriented net muscle forces during scapular plane abduction

Luke T. Mattar, Arash B. Mahboobin, Adam J. Popchak, William J. Anderst, Volker Musahl, James J. Irrgang, Richard E. Debski

Summary: Exercise therapy fails in about 25.0% of cases for individuals with rotator cuff tears, and one reason for this failure may be the inability to strengthen and balance the muscle forces that keep the humeral head in the correct position. This study developed computational musculoskeletal models to compare the net muscle force before and after exercise therapy between successfully and unsuccessfully treated patients. The study found that unsuccessfully treated patients had less inferiorly oriented net muscle forces, which may increase the risk of impingement.

Differences in intra-foot movement strategies during locomotive tasks among chronic ankle instability, copers and healthy individuals

Peimin Yu, Xuanzhen Cen, Qichang Mei, Alan Wang, Yaodong Gu, Justin Fernandez

Summary: This study aimed to explore the intra-foot biomechanical differences among individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI), copers, and healthy individuals during dynamic tasks. The study found that copers and CAI individuals had smaller dorsiflexion angles and copers presented a more eversion position compared to healthy participants. Copers also had greater dorsiflexion angles in the metatarsophalangeal joint and more inversion moments in the subtalar joint during certain tasks. These findings can help in designing interventions to restore ankle joint functions in CAI individuals.
