Objectives: To review the impact of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in reducing ADHD symptoms in children. Methods: Peer-reviewed experimental literature published from 1980 to Mai 2009 is consulted (Psychinfo, Medline, and resulting reference lists). Results: Placebo-controlled studies with ADHD or hyperactive children show no effects on behaviors or cognition when only n-6 (omega-6) PUFA, only docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or n-6 and n-3 (omega-3) short-chain PUFA are supplemented. Yet three out of four studies suggest that a combination of long-chain n-3 and n-6 fatty acids (DHA, eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA], and gamma-linolenic acid [GLA]) supplemented daily for 3 to 4 months could lead to a reduction in ADHD symptomatology. Results on cognitive outcomes are inconsistent. Conclusions: Evidence is too limited to reach definitive conclusions but suggests that research on the impact of long-chain PUFA (n-3 and n-6) should continue with special focus on individual differences (genetic and fatty acid markers), mechanisms (brain imaging), and new enhanced methods of systematic observations of behaviors.

Psychosocial Characteristics by Weight Loss and Engagement in a Digital Intervention Supporting Self-Management of Weight

Ellen S. Mitchell, Qiuchen Yang, Heather Behr, Annabell Ho, Laura DeLuca, Christine N. May, Andreas Michaelides

Summary: This study examined the impact of psychosocial characteristics on weight loss outcomes in a self-managed digital program. The findings suggest that anxiety plays a key role in weight loss, while flourishing can predict the weight loss outcome group. The study highlights the importance of considering psychosocial factors in creating effective interventions, particularly in underexplored digital weight loss programs.

Self-Reported Nutritional Factors Are Associated with Weight Loss at 18 Months in a Self-Managed Commercial Program with Food Categorization System: Observational Study

Ellen S. Mitchell, Qiuchen Yang, Annabell S. Ho, Heather Behr, Christine N. May, Laura DeLuca, Andreas Michaelides

Summary: The study found that consuming more low-energy-dense and less high-energy-dense foods, as well as improving nutrition knowledge and making healthier food choices, were associated with weight loss in a digital commercial weight loss program. The inclination towards food choice even when just depicted was also linked to long-term weight loss.

Comparing Outcomes of a Digital Commercial Weight Loss Program in Adult Cancer Survivors and Matched Controls with Overweight or Obesity: Retrospective Analysis

Christine N. May, Annabell Suh Ho, Qiuchen Yang, Meaghan McCallum, Neil M. Iyengar, Amy Comander, Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Andreas Michaelides

Summary: This retrospective study explores the effectiveness of a digital commercial weight loss program (Noom) in cancer survivors and matched controls, showing that survivors lost less weight than controls but still achieved significant weight loss in four months. Cancer survivors may require additional support to engage in weight management behaviors.

How Do Emotions during Goal Pursuit in Weight Change over Time? Retrospective Computational Text Analysis of Goal Setting and Striving Conversations with a Coach during a Mobile Weight Loss Program

Heather Behr, Annabell Suh Ho, Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Qiuchen Yang, Laura DeLuca, Andreas Michealides

Summary: Emotion words during goal pursuit in a weight loss program were analyzed using a computational text analysis approach. Positive emotion words remained stable while negative emotion words increased over time, contrary to self-report findings. Concrete goal setters used more positive words and there was a trend towards greater weight loss with higher negative emotion word use.

Body Positivity and Self-Compassion on a Publicly Available Behavior Change Weight Management Program

Meaghan McCallum, Annabell Suh Ho, Christine N. May, Heather Behr, Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Andreas Michealides

Summary: The study found that participation in a commercial behavior change weight management program can lead to improvements in body positivity and self-compassion, with greater engagement associated with these improvements. The results also suggest that curriculum and coaching can help individuals experience enhancements in body positivity and self-compassion while learning about acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Changes in Health-Promoting Behaviors and Their Association with Weight Loss, Retention, and Engagement on a Digital Program: Prospective Study

Heather Behr, Sydney Earl, Annabell Suh Ho, Jihye Lee, Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Meaghan McCallum, Christine N. May, Andreas Michaelides

Summary: Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors are associated with disease mortality reduction and improved well-being. This study examined the changes in health-promoting behaviors and their associations with weight loss, retention, and engagement in a digital weight-management program. Participants lost a significant amount of weight and reported improved health-promoting behaviors. Learned health-promoting behaviors were better predictors of retention and program engagement. The findings highlight the potential benefits of digital weight management interventions.

The Impact of a Digital Weight Loss Intervention on Health Care Resource Utilization and Costs Compared Between Users and Nonusers With Overweight and Obesity: Retrospective Analysis Study

Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Alexander Fabry, Annabell Suh Ho, Christine N. May, Matthew Baldwin, Paige Blanco, Kyle Smith, Andreas Michaelides, Mostafa Shokoohi, Michael West, Kim Gotera, Omnya El Massad, Anna Zhou

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of Noom Weight use on health care resource utilization (HRU) and health care costs, comparing 43,047 program users with 14,555 non-users. The results showed that Noom Weight users had lower costs and resource utilization compared to non-users. The study suggests that Noom Weight could be a cost-effective weight management program for individuals with overweight and obesity.

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Outcomes of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Mobile Mental Well-being Program (Noom Mood): Single-Arm Prospective Cohort Study

Meaghan McCallum, Annabell Suh Ho, Ellen Siobhan Mitchell, Christine N. May, Heather Behr, Lorie Ritschel, Kirk Mochrie, Andreas Michaelides

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of Noom Mood, a commercial mobile cognitive behavioral therapy- and mindfulness-based program. Results showed that the majority of participants found the program easy to use, felt confident recommending it to others, and perceived it to be effective in improving stress and anxiety. Significant improvements were observed in anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, depressive feelings, emotion regulation, and optimism. Participants reported benefiting most from learning skills, interacting with program features, and gaining awareness of their emotions and thought patterns. Suggestions were also made to improve product functionality and usability.
