Summary: A fast, simple, and cost-effective analytical procedure for traceable determination of lithium concentration in human serum has been proposed. The method is based on monitoring lithium isotope dilution through the partially resolved isotope shift in its electronic transition. The results are comparable to more complex and expensive techniques such as isotope dilution mass spectrometry.

Summary: The development of miniature, sensitive, high throughput, and in-situ analytical instruments using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has become a hot topic in modern analytical chemistry. DBD offers advantages such as easy operation, simple configuration, ambient working temperature and pressure, low power consumption, and miniature dimension. Its applications in analytical atomic spectrometry include serving as excitation or atomization sources in AES, AAS, and AFS, as well as functioning as a vapor generation system.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of heavy metals and elements in urine and blood of hookah users and non-users, as well as their clinical symptoms. Results showed significantly higher levels of lead, arsenic, and thallium in hookah users compared to non-users, along with common clinical symptoms of constipation and fatigue. These findings can guide policy development to regulate hookah smoking and prevent associated health risks.

Summary: This study proposes a new method based on direct immersion dual-drop microextraction for simultaneous speciation and enrichment of V(IV) and V(V). The method avoids tedious and complicated pre-oxidation/pre-reduction and centrifugation/filtration operations, and has been successfully applied to determine V(IV) and V(V) in water samples.

Summary: This article presents a rapid and accurate method for determining the zinc and iron content in food using high-resolution continuum source graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. By monitoring a narrow spectral interval, both elements can be measured simultaneously in a single firing, making the analysis fast and sensitive. Analysis of a large set of vegetable samples indicates higher zinc and iron contents in homegrown vegetables compared to store-bought ones.

Summary: This paper validates an analytical method for determining heavy metal content in fish and fishery resources using microwave-assisted digestion method combined with Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS) and Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS). The method showed high reliability and accuracy in terms of experimental parameters, linearity, and accuracy.

Summary: A direct immersion dual-drop microextraction (DIDDME) method was developed for the separation and preconcentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Using two organic drops on needle tips of microsyringes, each containing a specific chelating reagent, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were selectively extracted into different drops. The method showed low detection limits, wide linear range, high enrichment factors, and good precision, and was successfully applied to quantify Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in food samples.

Summary: A novel hybrid air-assisted solvent terminated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (AA-ST-DLLME) method using a domestic fish-tank pump as a bubble generator was developed for the determination of Pb in water and beverage samples by GFAAS. The method achieved a high enrichment factor, preconcentration factor, and extraction efficiency under optimized conditions, with low LOD and LOQ. The method was successfully applied for the determination of trace level of Pb in various samples, with satisfactory spiked recovery results and good agreement with standard reference materials.

Summary: A magnetic porous organic polymer (MPOPs) with good magnetism, high porosity, and large surface area was synthesized in aqueous phase. This material showed fast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacities towards lead and mercury ions. A magnetic solid phase extraction method coupled with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry was developed for trace lead and mercury determination in environmental water samples using the prepared MPOPs as a sorbent. The method exhibited low detection limits and satisfactory recoveries.

Summary: A new two-stage probe atomization method was proposed for determining total arsenic in urine, using a high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer. This method effectively separates arsenic from matrix components, with a low detection limit and a wide quantification range.

Summary: The study compared the determination characteristics of copper and manganese in seawater by high-resolution continuum-source and low-resolution line-source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. HR-CS GFAAS can determine elements in undiluted samples, while LR-LS GFAAS only allows determination at double dilution. The detection and quantification limits for manganese were significantly lower in HR-CS GFAAS.

Summary: In recent years, tattooing has emerged as a popular form of self-expression and art. However, the process of injecting ink into the skin for tattoos exposes individuals to various elements, posing potential health risks. This study examined the presence of 8 elements in different tattoo ink colors available in the Greek market, imported from the USA and China. The results showed that most inks contained chromium, copper, nickel, and lead, with higher concentrations found in brown ink from the USA.
